Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is live and players have quite a bit to enjoy as the game is a full package this time around, with a stellar campaign, rocking online multiplayer, and even some cooperative fun to be had!
And while a campaign and multiplayer are expected at this point, one may wonder what cooperative even is. And where is Spec Ops this time? If you’re like me and were surprised the first time you saw that cooperative mode, then have no fear, because we can explain it. So, let’s talk about how co-op works in Modern Warfare 2.
How Does Co-Op Work in Modern Warfare 2?
If you’re a player who’s been really excited to get into some Spec Ops in Modern Warfare 2, then you have some good news to hear! Spec Ops is here and ready to play at launch. In fact, that’s what this cooperative mode actually is, even though it isn’t communicated very well.
At launch, there are a total of 3 different operations that you and another player (random player or an invited friend) can set out on that will have you carry out a plethora of various objectives over the course of them in distinct maps, each having 3-stars ratings that can be reached.
The operations available are:
- Low Profile
- Denied Area
- Defender: Mt. Zaya

In addition to that, players have 3 different kits that they can choose from, offering access to different weapons, perks, and gear. The kits can be leveled up over the course of your time with these operations, giving you access to even more items for each of them.
Here are the kits available at launch:
- Assault Kit
- Medic Kit
- Recon Kit
Players will also have other incentives to continue playing these Spec Ops operations, as there is intel that can be found throughout each map that will give you more info on the world of Modern Warfare 2, and, leveling up gives you access to rewards that can only be unlocked through coop mode. There are calling cards, Operator skins, and even emblems up for grabs.
You can also choose to play as any of your unlocked Operators, and use your XP Tokens during gameplay, and there are even Daily Challenges designed specifically for cooperative mode as well to help drive gameplay.
So, that’s really all you need to know about how the coop mode works in Modern Warfare 2! Be sure to check out some of our other great guides on Modern Warfare 2 as well!
