Hogwarts Legacy. The much anticipated game that takes place in the grand wizarding world, one full of vibrance and life, hustle and bustle. You will spend most of your time in Hogwarts, a school full of hundreds if not thousands of inhabitants. Yet, despite all of this energy and life, you may feel lonely and isolated. Why is this?
The inherent isolation in Hogwarts Legacy
Sure, Hogwarts Legacy is full of characters and enemies and students and creatures, yet it all fails to create any sense of community or belonging. Strangest of all, Hogwarts is a school, a place that’s supposed to be brimming with feelings and community and connection. So why don’t players feel like part of something more, and how have the developers managed to make your character feel so alone?

The simple answer is the lack of chit chat. You’re in a school, and yet interactions with other characters that aren’t giving you a quest or helping in a quest is non-existent. Simply gliding through the school as if a wraith, the other students don’t bat an eyelid at you. Everyone gets on with what they’re doing, impartial to your existence. Not really a school vibe, right?
It would be so nice to hear interactions from students of lower years, or different houses. There was a real opportunity to have unique interactions depending on what house you were, and the house of the other NPCs. Diversity in the idle chatter and interactions with you would elevate the game significantly. No longer would you simply be phasing through the halls, but you’ll be walking through with your classmates and schoolmates. You would feel a part of the wizarding world, not an extra piece that everyone ignores – unless they need you.
Additionally, even the shops feel deserted and empty. Hardly any shoppers in sight, and yet the staff refuse to greet you. You’d expect such public places to be bustling with life and conversation, and yet it all falls flat. It’s a shame the developers outright ignored all of these little things that would greatly adorn the bigger picture of being part of a lively world.
