Destiny 2: How to Complete Volantes Violentiam and Get the Manticore Catalyst

Eriana's Vow, Witherhoard, and now the Manticore.

Destiny 2’s the Manticore is a pretty fun Exotic Submachine Gun. It’s a blast to use, despite not being incredibly powerful. The Manticore Catalyst could potentially change that, though. It’s one of the better Catalysts in the game, which is a relief because you have to complete Volantes Violentiam to get it – and that’s a nightmare.

I’m going to go over how you can get the Manticore Catalyst in Destiny 2, how to complete the related Volantes Violentiam quest, and what the Catalyst does. Prepare yourself – you’re in for a long grind.

The first thing you need to do is obviously obtain the Manticore. This is as simple as redeeming it from the season pass once you unlock it, and given that you’re looking for the Catalyst, it’s safe to assume that you already own the base weapon.

Either way, once you have the weapon, you’ll get a new quest marker in the Tower telling you to visit the Gunsmith. Do that, and he’ll give you the Volantes Violentiam quest. Completing this quest is what unlocks the Maitcore Catalyst.

Step 1 – Defeat 50 Targets with Submachine Guns While Airborne

The first step of Volantes Violentiam is to simply kill 50 targets with Submachine Guns while you’re airborne. You don’t even need to actually use the Manticore for this – although it’s a lot of fun and will help this step progress faster.

You can get these kills in any activity you want – it doesn’t make a difference. Just get 50 kills and you’re done!

That’s not too bad, right? 50 kills is easy. You can get that done in a Strike. Yeah, well, just wait until you hear about step two.

Step 2 – Complete Playlist Activities While Using the Manticore

What do I mean when I say complete playlist activities with the Manticore? Well, Volantes Violentiam’s second step involves generating calibration data through activity completions and killing targets. These two objectives don’t sound too daunting on their own, but they really are.

To generate calibration data, you need to complete those playlist activities, meaning Gambit, Crucible, or Strikes. This objective is tracked out of 200, and an individual Strike gives you one. Yes – just one. If you were to do this objective by only running Strikes, you would have to complete 200 of them.

Thankfully, Nightfalls and Crucible/Gambit wins give you bonus progress, but not much. Heroic Nightfalls, which are the highest tier of Nightfall with matchmaking, only give you two points – meaning 100 completions.

If you have a team to run Master Nightfalls, you’ll get this quest step done a lot faster, but you’re certainly in for a pretty lengthy grind either way.

The killing targets objective is a little less tedious – it’s just around 700 kills with the Manticore itself. Compared to 200 Strike runs, that’s child’s play. Guardian kills reward bonus progress for this step, too, although you’ll have it finished way before you generate all the calibration data you need.

Step 3 – Turn the Quest in to Banshee

Once you do manage to finish the Eriana’s Vow-ish slog that is Volantes Violentiam step 2, all you have to do is turn the quest into Banshee. Once you do, you’ll be rewarded with your very own Manticore Catalyst.

What Does the Manticore Catalyst Do in Destiny 2?

So, is all that effort worth it? Yeah, kind of. As far as Exotic Catalysts go, the Manticore’s is pretty powerful. It gives the gun the added bonus of increasing your damage resistance while you’re airborne. This means that when you use the gun’s anti-grav thrusters, you’ll deal more damage, and take less damage.

It’s not enough to make the Manticore a META weapon, but it is pretty powerful as far as Catalyst effects go.
