If you loved the JRPGs from the 90s then Chained Echoes is likely right up your alley. It takes several queues from beloved franchises like Final Fantasy and The Legend of Dragoon to deliver a love-letter to fans. But this doesn’t mean it just wholesale lifts from these series as it offers notable changes to the formula.
How Does SP Work in Chained Echoes
Chained Echoes does not have a typical leveling system for characters. Meaning, your characters don’t acquire XP and level up when you hit a threshold. Instead, you use Grimoire Shards, aka GS, you gain to unlock new skills. This is, in essence, the way you level your characters.
Instead, SP in Chained Echoes is gained with any equipped skill, which acts more like the traditional system of JRPGs. Once you hit a threshold, your skill levels up. However, while equipped skills gain SP, so does your character in general. This means you can level up a skill not equipped, as long as you have enough SP through your character. You need the full amount though, you can’t apply 50 SP to a skill that needs 100 to level up and get halfway there. So make a note of how much you need to upgrade the skill you want.
You gain SP through battle by defeating enemies, so be sure to find a good farming location with enemies that give a lot of SP. Your character’s SP caps out at 999, so be sure to spend them on the skills you want to upgrade as you gain them.
