Can You Build in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2?

Being able to construct your own camps, bases, and other assorted constructs is pretty central to Fortnite’s identity. The fort part of Fortnite, if you will. However, in recent months, Fortnite has gone through a variety of shakeups, from introducing new gameplay mechanics and characters to flipping the entire gosh darned island on its head. If ever there was a time to temporarily nix a major gameplay feature, it would be here and now. So, as I’m sure many of you are wondering right now, can you build in Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 2?

The answer is no, you sure can’t, and that’s on purpose. Chapter 3, Season 2 of Fortnite just began on Sunday, and this time, they’re really shaking things up by disabling building entirely. No building bases, no throwing up walls, none of it. It’s all disabled, at least for the time being. According to dataminers that have posted on Twitter and Reddit, building will only be disabled for about a weak, returning around March 29th.

In the meantime, Epic has tweaked Fortnite’s movement mechanics a bit to make up for the fact that you can’t hunker down in your own base anymore. You now have a tactical sprinting ability for dashing short distances, an overshield for keeping your skin on while running between cover, and a new vaulting mechanic allowing you to hop over short walls and climb up certain surfaces. There’s also a greater emphasis on existing movement mechanics like gliding and sliding.

Basically, the devs want you to spend an entire round on the move rather than holing up in one spot and taking potshots at people. It’s a little gameplay experiment, and if it’s not to your taste, things will be back to normal soon enough.
