Starting out in Hogwarts Legacy can be overwhelming for many as numerous choices are put before you and you are just scratching the surface. In this vast and consequential game, picking the right spells and talents will make a difference in your playstyle and how you can complete quests.
Since a lot of players don’t wish to lose time calculating which spells are the best to start with we have decided to create a guide. With this guide, we want to help you by pointing out what we believe are the best spell choices for any beginner in Hogwarts Legacy.
Which Spells Should You Choose at the Start of Hogwarts Legacy
Spells in Hogwarts Legacy are divided into three major categories:
- Yellow (control spells)
- Red (damage spells)
- Purple (force spells)
We mention this because the first thing you should know when starting out is that you need to have a balance of all three spell types in your spell diamonds. While we are on the topic of spell diamonds, make sure to use most of your talent points early on in the Core talent tree. The ones that are a must-have are Spell Knowledge I and Spell Knowledge II as these unlock more spell diamonds for you so you have a wider array of spells at your disposal at any time.
Now, let’s dive into the best spells of the game.

Accio
Accio is a great force spell for which you will find many of uses throughout the game. One of the main reasons we are mentioning it as one of the most important beginner spells is that it can essentially replace your Wingardium Leviosa spell and you can use that slot for something else.
What the advantage of Accio essentially comes down to is that when you pull up an object and hold it long enough, it will start levitating and you will have control over it as if you were using the Leviosa spell.
Furthermore, numerous side quests and missions like “Solved by the Bell” will require you to manipulate objects and put them in a certain order, the right place, etc. so Accio will prove crucial for your ability to complete missions without much trouble.
Depulso
Depulso is another force spell that will mostly help you in combat. Its main purpose is to blow objects or enemies away, so taking that you can’t be a barbarian or a crusader type of warrior, like in many popular RPGs, you will need to keep your distance from all enemies. By blowing enemies away from yourself, you also get some more time to think about the following spell that you are about to use and these extra seconds are precious when you are just starting Hogwarts Legacy.
Additionally, this can be a quick and fatal spell if some of your enemies are at the edge of a tower, mountain, etc., and need just a small nudge to be permanently dealt with.
Arresto Momentum
Arresto Momentum is a control spell that will slow living creatures and objects. While you can use it early on to give yourself some time to master perfect spell combos and skill diamond switching, it actually has other purposes far more important.
In some moments of Hogwarts Legacy, you will encounter boss enemies that will be really tough to deal with. Arresto Momentum will allow you to slow them a bit and help you dodge their attacks or position yourself better to release your offensive attacks without being interrupted.
Furthermore, since you can slow down anything, from time to time you will find that Arresto Momentum can have a lot more uses than you first thought it would. We won’t spoil much, but let’s just say that certain puzzles and obstacles will be easily dealt with when their movement can be slowed down or stopped with this unique spell.
