The Assassin’s Creed franchise is in an interesting position currently. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the most recent game, is set to receive at least another year of DLC including the upcoming Dawn of Ragnarok expansion. After that, no one knows exactly what comes next. Assassin’s Creed Infinity is rumored to be a live-service game but that is still in development. According to a recent article by Bloomberg, Ubisoft now has another Assassin’s Creed game also in development.
Ubisoft is Taking the Series Back to its Stealth Roots
The article from Bloomberg says that this game originally started as an expansion for Valhalla meaning it would probably have been a part of the Year 2 DLC content. This game, code-named Rift, will star the assassin Basim, who appeared in Valhalla, and will apparently be much smaller in terms of scope. Rift will be more of a stealth game like older entries in the series as opposed to the more recent RPG-open-world games.
Ubisoft plans to release the game either later this year or sometime in 2023. The article says it will arrive before Infinity. The game may face development trouble as a few Ubisoft games that were supposed to have been released by now are still in development. Skull & Bones, Beyond Good & Evil 2, and the Prince of Persia remake have all been delayed indefinitely despite being announced years ago.
The same might happen to Rift but we will just have to wait and see.
