Madden has been under fire for the last several years for a variety of reasons but fans tend to be most disappointed with franchise mode. Which has carried the same scouting and free agency systems for years. However, the game mode received a major overhaul this year in Madden 23, including the introduction of player motivations and tags.

Player Motivations

For the longest time, signing players in free agency generally came down to which team can offer the most money. So, if there’s a worse team out there with fewer prospects and less potential, a big-name free agent might be more inclined to sign there simply because they can offer them the most money. Even if it might not be the most logical decision based on where that player is in their career.

Now, in Madden 23, player motivations have been added to create a more realistic and challenging free agency experience. Every player will have up to 3 motivations and you will have to check off as many of these boxes if you hope to sign said player. Each motivation is ranked in order of importance as well, with their highest motivation being at the top and the lowest motivation being at the bottom.

These are the 12 player motivations in Madden 23;

  • Big Market – Players with this motivation prefer to play for teams that are located in big markets.
  • Close To Home – Players with this motivation prefer to sign with a team that is close to where they grew up.
  • Head Coach Historic Record – Players with this motivation prefer to sign with a team that has a coach with a winning record or has a history of winning.
  • Highest Offer – Players with this motivation prefer to play for teams that give them the biggest contract.
  • Historic Championships – Players with this motivation prefer to sign with a team that has a history of winning championships.
  • Mentor At Position – Players with this motivation prefer to play for teams that have a mentor at their position.
  • No Income Tax – Players with this motivation prefer to play for teams located in states with no income tax.
  • Scheme Fit – Players with this motivation prefer to play for teams where they are a good scheme fit.
  • Super Bowl Chase – Players with this motivation prefer to sign with a team that has a chance to compete for a Super Bowl right away.
  • Team Has Franchise QB – Players with this motivation prefer to play for teams that have a franchise quarterback.
  • Top Of The Depth Chart – Players with this motivation prefer to play for teams where they can be at the top of the depth chart.
  • Warm Weather State – Players with this motivation prefer to play in cities that have good weather.

Player Tags

Another new feature that was added to Madden 23’s franchise mode are player tags. Which are similar to player motivations in how they impact free agency and a player’s role within the franchise. Although, they differ in that they have a greater impact on where a player lands in the depth chart and how interested a team will be in said player during free agency.

Unlike player motivations, not every player will have a player tag. Generally speaking, this is a feature that is reserved for either really good players, very young players or older veterans.

These are the 9 player tags in Madden 23;

  • Award Winner – Players will be awarded this tag if they’re coming off a year in which they won a major award (MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, etc.). Which will increase the number of teams interested in the player during free agency.
  • Bridge Player – If labelled the starter, teams will look for their replacement in free agency or the draft. Future Starters will be placed ahead of them on the depth chart.
  • Bridge QB – Same as the Bridge Player, just for the quarterback position.
  • Day 1 Starter – Day 1 Starters will automatically claim the starting spot above other similarly rated players in the depth chart. This helps to ease roster management as teams are unlikely to sign or draft a replacement in free agency.
  • Franchise QB – This tag is given to the truly elite quarterbacks in Madden 23 (Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, etc.). A team with a player labeled a Franchise QB will be less inclined to draft or sign a replacement in free agency.
  • Future Starter – This player will receive bonus XP during weekly training and will be placed above similarly rated bridge players on the depth chart.
  • Mentor – Mentors boost weekly XP for players at their position. Teams are more interested in these players during free agency, specifically compared to other veterans.
  • Trade Target – Players with this tag will be added to the trade block.
  • QB Of The Future – Similar to Day 1 Starter just for the quarterback position. This player is more likely to start above similarly rated players and teams are unlikely to draft or sign their replacement.
