All Details for “Checkmate Control” Mode in Destiny 2 Lightfall

It's about time Crucible got some love.

In Bungie’s ‘state of the game’ address for Lightfall, it briefly mentioned a new Crucible game mode coming to Destiny 2 called “Checkmate Control”. This is intended to be a Labs mode that will go live at some point during Season of Defiance. There were only a few lines on it in the ‘state of the game’. So, we don’t know too much about what exactly the game mode brings to the table.

Checkmate Control is a new Crucible Labs game mode Bungie will introduce with Season of Defiance. We only got a handful of lines on the mode, so we don’t know too much yet. We likely won’t until the mode is live, either.

There are two things we know for certain, though:

  • “Checkmate Control” will be a Crucible Labs mode – meaning it won’t always be available.
  • The Destiny 2 player sandbox is dramatically altered for “Checkmate Control”, this includes adjustments to weapon damage, ammo, and ability uptime.

Beyond those two details, we don’t know anything concrete. We can speculate, though.

The wording of the “Checkmate Control” announcement makes it sound like Super regen rates are going to be slower. In particular, they highlight how they want the mode to “reward players who use their smarts and their skills.” From that, we can make an assumption that this is going to be more heavily focused on strategic gunplay, as opposed to ability and super spamming.

In terms of objective, we can assume this is going to be a variation on the typical “Control” game mode, just with that altered sandbox.

That’s pretty much everything we know about “Checkmate Control” right now. We’ll have to wait until it’s live during Season of Defiance to find out more.
