Elite Dangerous: How To Land on a Planet

Elite Dangerous is an adrenaline-pumping flight simulation game that allows players to embark on an epic space adventure. Taking over as the pilot of a spacecraft, players will get to explore the vast open-world and evolving narrative featured in a stunning recreation of the entire Milky Way galaxy.

Although, regardless of whether you’re farming certain materials, completing missions or simply exploring, knowing how to land on a planet is an extremely important part of the game.

In this guide, we’re going to break down everything you need to know about how to land on a planet in Elite Dangerous.

Elite Dangerous: How To Land on a Planet

First of all, it’s important to note that not all planets are landable and how you go about landing will depend on the planet. Since every planet’s mass, gravity and orbit are completely different.

To see if a planet can be landed on, you will need to check the system map and look for a planet with a light blue arc on the left-hand side. Once you’ve found a planet with this symbol, you can now travel to the desired location and get ready to land by following these six easy steps:

1. Fly over to a landable planet in supercruise mode, drop out once you’re about to enter the atmosphere.
2. Align your ship with the marker on your HUD, pay close attention to the read outs of degrees and bearing. Keep in mind that planets with lower planetary gravity will require less speed to line up with.
3. Line up your ship with the ground at a 45-degree angle. Assuming you’re lined up properly and have entered at the right speed, you will then drop into the atmosphere.
4. Once you’re 20 km above the planet’s surface, the ship will disengage from supercruise mode, which will slow it down dramatically. However, be aware that you will now have to take over the manual landing.
5. Glide down towards the ground below but stay connected with the blue line around the planetary body on your HUD. Keep your angle of descent around 40 degrees.
6. You will need to request permission to land if you’re landing at a port, in which case there will be a large marked area for you to land in. Simply glide over, and land as normal. The ship will notify you of a successful landing and then proceed to shut off the engines.
