Will Chivalry 2 have Single Player?

I don’t recall precisely who it was, but I remember a few years ago that some game company exec said that single player experiences were dying out, and that all games in the future will be multiplayer-focused, if not multiplayer only. Now, obviously, that’s completely false; single player games are alive and well, it’s just that multiplayer experiences have become much more ubiquitous with improvements in internet connectivity. Some games are designed from the ground up to be single player and won’t work any other way, and the same goes for games designed to be multiplayer. With that in mind, will Chivalry 2 have single player?

The original Chivalry was designed from the very beginning to be a multiplayer experience; all of its mechanics were created and tweaked with the assumption that multiple real people would be controlling characters on a battlefield at once. The game did support offline bot matches, but that’s not really what you’d call a proper “single player” mode. It’s just as well, as the game didn’t really have a “plot” so much as a “setting.” You’re a knight, there are some bad knights, go make them dead. While Chivalry 2 is poised to be a major upgrade over Chivalry in a variety of ways, offline single player likely isn’t going to be one of those ways.

Will Chivalry 2 have Single Player?

At time of writing, Torn Banner hasn’t announced any plans to implement any kind of single player content in Chivalry 2, directing all of their energy instead toward making it the best possible online multiplayer experience they can manage. Like the first game, Chivalry 2 does have a setting, that being the Agatha Knights battling over territory with the Mason Order, and it is confirmed to take place 20 years after Chivalry, but again, since Chivalry didn’t really do anything with its setting, that doesn’t mean much.

If nothing else, it is probably a safe bet that you’ll still be able to play Chivalry 2 offline against bots, so if your internet is out and you have nothing better to do, it could be a decent way to waste twenty minutes. If you’re hoping for a full-on story mode, though, you ain’t getting it here.
