The story of the Ruin DLC is meant to clear up any questions that may have rose through the release of Security Breach. As FNAF is known for its intricate lore that can leave some fans scratching their heads in pure confusion, every installment is an attempt to not only clear up some questions but to leave even more questions behind for the next installment to confirm or deny all new theories. Whilst Ruin confirms much needed concerns for Security Breach’s canon ending, we also saw the reveal for the true antagonist of the series. Although William Afton has been a feared name in the franchise, the switch to a permanent fear of The Mimic was meant since Sister Location. But how do we explain Gregory’s behavior in FNAF: Security Breach Ruin? This is Vincent’s take on why Gregory betrayed Cassie in Ruin.
Now I know what you are thinking – why did Gregory betray Cassie? We already have an incredibly limited selection of female protagonists in the franchise and now one of them has been “killed off”. The story of Ruin DLC is as follows: Cassie heads into the Pizzaplex after receiving an SOS text from Gregory stating that he was trapped. Whilst this was the case for the original setting of Security Breach, the same cannot be said for Ruin as it blatantly takes place after those events. So as we all know the fate of Gregory to a certain extent, we can all attest to the assumption that Gregory is not trapped.
The Ending of Security Breach – Ruin DLC
As you play throughout the DLC, the ending reveals that it was in fact not Gregory pleading for your help but instead Mimic. For those unaware of Mimic’s identity in the FNAF lore and its timeline, Mimic acted as Circus Baby in Sister Location. The Circus Baby in that game was not the real Baby android but rather the Mimic who instead of being an endoskeleton, it performed and enacted nefarious and highly manipulative acts through technological systems such as inside a CHIP. The canon ending of Sister Location showed that Mimic was safely removed from Circus Baby’s body, later being placed into what we know as the Pizzaplex years later. The Mimic took its form once more but was stopped by Gregory and Glamrock Freddy. Trapped inside the Pizzaplex as it decayed away after the blast, the Mimic got to work inside the only form of technology it had its hands on – phone records.
The Mimic took Gregory’s identity and pretended to be him, sending a text to Cassie to lure her in and take down the security system of M.X.E.S. This resulted in the reveal we all saw for Ruin ending which upon following the ‘real’ Gregory’s instructions to the elevator shaft, was later revealed to be a trick of its own in which Gregory snapped the elevator cables, allowing Cassie to plummet. For those asking about his betrayal against who we can only assume was his best friend, that was not Gregory on the system. The timing in which the ‘real’ Gregory spoke to Cassie was suspicious as hell and one that does not make sense if we presume that human Gregory magically came to her rescue right at the end of the game.
The Question on Everyone’s Lips – Did Gregory Betray Cassie?
We have a lot of evidence pointing towards there never being a real Gregory throughout the game and it is all from the POI where Gregory guides Cassie to the exit. In the illusion ending, he claims that he is safe now when in actuality, Cassie has been tricked and is seeing a mirage of safety through the Vanny lens. Inside the elevator shaft, Gregory is communicating via the speaker system which would imply that he has been here the entire time, controlling the system. Seeing as Cassie turned off M.X.E.S. which protected the system from Mimic, it would only make sense that the Gregory on the speakers was still Mimic. Finally, the Mimic, although can replicate a human voice still has imperfections in its delivery such as static and strangely placed pauses.
What this all means is that Gregory never betrayed Cassie but rather Cassie fell victim to The Mimic twice within a short period of time. But I cannot blame her, after all she is only a child.
