Do You Have to Beat FNAF: Security Breach to Play Ruin?

Layers of lore to consume for free

The Five Nights at Freddy’s fandom are being spoilt for choice this year in 2023 for FNAF content. From the newly released Security Breach DLC titled Ruin to the upcoming sequel for VR: Help Wanted and finally with the highly anticipated Five Nights at Freddy’s film. There is so much content, so many questions and very little answers to fill that bottomless pit of satisfaction that a good FNAF conspiracy theory can fill. But Scott is looking out for his fanbase always. With comics to keep the lore updated and its video games getting more visionary for FNAF. With an origin story based all around the Purple Man, we now see a shift towards the new main villain of the story – The Mimic. Although this has been present in video game form since Sister Location, it appears to be spreading like malware across the story. But can those who have not played Security Breach play its DLC Ruin? This is Vincent’s guide to answer this.

Can Ruin be Played if you did not Play Security Breach?

The story of Security Breach follows Gregory, a brand new character to the FNAF franchise and one that has no prior history to make him particularly special to the animatronic lore that we are all aware of. Whilst this character does not become another victim to the nefarious bite, his story is crucial in explaining antagonists such as William Afton/ Burntrap, Vannessa/Vanny and The Mimic. Whilst the DLC for Security Breach is in place for those who want to learn more about the real antagonist of the Breach of Pizzaplex, you can in fact go into the game without knowing what went down in Security Breach and treat it purely as a short horror experience. The DLC moves fully into the virtual realm with the Vanny mask being used to manipulate and alter Cassie’s (protagonist) vision by connecting her neuron pathways to the security system of the Pizzaplex itself.

The story of Ruin can only truly be understood in the context of both knowing the basics of FNAF whilst also having played or watched Security Breach. Whilst it can be enjoyed from a horror perspective, you will perhaps be left feeling much like myself at the end of Little Nightmares II, in utter shock and feeling truly betrayed. To understand its ending, the game in which the DLC belongs to should be played. Ruin is approximately 2hrs of FNAF content added for free. It can be played without having the original game but it is recommended by the devs that you play through Security Breach first.
