Where’s Roblox 2.0? Does Roblox need a sequel?

If Roblox is so good, where's the sequel?

Roblox is a game that is beloved in the hearts of many, from kids to teens to young adults. More than just a game, Roblox serves as a collection of near-endless games, dubbed experiences, for you to browse. People sign up to the site and either create games using Roblox’s friendly game creating software, or play games uploaded by other people. Essentially a game catalogue of free games, Roblox serves as staple of many people’s gaming experiences. Has the time come for a sequel, however?

Does Roblox need a sequel?

The purpose of sequels

Before we think about Roblox 2.0, let’s consider a sequel’s purpose. For the most part, games that receive sequels are story-based, and the sequel serves as a continuation of the story, or the start of another narrative in the same universe. With the sequel comes engine improvements, graphical quality, and different / more / modified mechanics to deliver a better quality game.

For example, Slime Rancher 2 takes place in a completely different location and begins a whole new story. However it really works as the mechanics and graphics have been taken to a whole new level, allowing for new experiences and a better time.

Roblox, although often considered a game, isn’t exactly one in the regular sense. Roblox should not be thought as a game, but a game distribution site, such as the App Store, or Steam or Epic Games. It does break tradition in many ways, with the avatar store and Robux system and the very small minority of games you actually pay for, but it is closer to that than a game. There is no call for a Steam 2.0, or a Itch.io sequel for a reason.

Game distribution sites don’t get sequels, they update and get better.

Roblox is an ever-changing site

Sure, Roblox has problems and things that could be adjusted and modified, which could be rectified in Roblox 2.0, but Roblox itself is an ever-changing site.

Instead of needing a whole new site, Roblox 2.0, Roblox would instead be updated. This is a cheaper and quicker way to make improvements and adjustments. Aesthetic adjustments and engine balances don’t warrant a whole new site as the existing site can easily be modified.

Sequels are generally better in quality, but that is a feature that simply comes with the course of making a new game. The engine and graphical improvements would not be enough to justify making a whole new game on their own.

Even more choice?

However, with a sequel, Roblox could make dramatic and huge changes whilst keeping the original site. The characters, games, systems, engines and experiences could be radically upheaved and modified to create an entirely new experience.

A Roblox 2.0 could take a more mature stance of the game, allowing for more complex experiences and more adult and mature characters to blend it. It is obvious why Roblox hasn’t taken this move to their original site considering how well it has worked for them, and the sheer majority of players who love Roblox the way it is.

However, with Roblox 2.0, they could experiment freely whilst keeping Roblox up and running. With both games running at the same time, Roblox could really bring in more players who are warded off by the child-like avatars and playerbase. They could target a new demographic without the worry of ruining what has worked.

Will we ever see a Roblox 2.0?

Roblox, ultimately, does not need a sequel due to it being ever-changing and not exactly a game. However, if they make radical and extreme changes, a Roblox 2.0 could be a very interesting experiment and success, and people will flock between the two games.

The idea is amusing and the execution would be harmless.

However, Roblox is such a huge success that they simply do not need to branch out in such a way. It would cost them considerably and would take them away from the original Roblox site, which only works the way it does through the undivided attention it receives from its players and developers.

So, in summation, we will very likely never see a sequel, but instead get to participate in a game distribution site that is always changing and improving.
