Finding a way to communicate with the outside world in the middle of a war can be tricky. What with snipers shooting you from afar as you take a look at the gorgeous sunset inside the Pillbox. There is a chance that the only people you interact with from now on are those who have lost their minds down below, or the Beast that greets you with every noise you make. But if you want to make it out of the Bunker alive then you need to get to the Communications Room and discover the Arsenal code so that you can get some Dynamite in your pocket and finally blast a hole out of this literal hellhole. This is Vincent’s guide on how to get the Arsenal Code by finding the Communications Key in Amnesia: The Bunker.
Where to Find the Communications Key in Amnesia: The Bunker
In my first playthrough I found this Key by absolute magic, later discovering all of the clues needed to finding its location, only after already using the item. The Communications Key is needed to unlock the Communications Room so that you can get the Arsenal Code for the Dynamite. It is one of the most important items in the game as you desperately need this to get out of the Bunker. The Communications Rooms is located at the end of Soldier Quarters. But you first need a Key to unlock the door. Strangely, after playing through The Bunker multiple times, the Communications Key was always in Picart’s bunk, but in my latest playthrough it moved to Cazal’s bunk instead. So you need to either check all bunk mail boxes (at end of beds), move pillows and hats off the bed as the key could be underneath, or break into the Security Room to the right of the Communications door. In this room, open the cabinet under the fake key to reveal which bunk you need to find.
How to Get Into the Security Room
You may have noticed that the Security Room is locked. Now, you do have the option to go ahead and try the Barracks (A and B), check all of the Bed Bunks (Mail Boxes, under Pillows and Hats) first for the Communications Key however you may find that the Beast is all over you as you keep needing to wind up that Flashlight of yours. Instead, you can find a way to open the Security Room door. All of the ways of doing so however are very loud, therefore you should first open the Dark Room next to the Security Room for a quick getaway where you can hide under the table until the Beast leaves.
Ways of opening the Security Room inside the Soldiers Quarters are:
- Use a Shotgun to blast open the door (aim anywhere at door and shoot once).
- Throw a Frag Grenade at the base of the door.
- Find Cinder Block and throw at door twice.
If you do not want to use any resources for this door, your best bet is the Cinder Block as there is one located inside the Soldiers Quarters. However, the fact that you need to throw this twice means that you will need to be as quick as possible in picking it up to throw once again in order to bring the door down. You do not want to have to repeatedly throw, hide, throw, hide just to get this door open. The Cinder Block can be found beside the only usable entrance of Barracks (B) when you first entered the Quarters. You need to turn left from the Communications door and go to the dead-end. At this blockage of rubble, look down and left, where you will to find the Cinder Block beside the Barrack’s doorway.
How to Get Arsenal Code
The Arsenal Code can be found via the Communications Radio. Even though you have the Key to get in, you need to turn on specific switches in order to power the Radio. This is the map overview given to players to take you to the correct place however all you need is to hit 2 switches by you can follow the route on the lines yellow to blue.
Now that you have the Communications Key, head for Barracks (A). This is located on your right as you turn around from the Communications Door or on your left from the Soldier Quarters entrance. Go to the door located towards the back of the Barracks but on the right-hand side. It has a black and white poster next to it. Walk through the corridor and follow it around. There is a booby-trap here, unless you have previously destroyed it using the Bolt Cutters.
You need to get past the Rats covering the corpse around the corner. There are a lot of options available: Gas Grenade (requires Gas Mask), Flare, Frag Grenade, Stick and cloth (requires Lighter) or Revolver. Alternatively, you can blast through the wooden door behind you (at the corner of the corridor you came from). The door is locked and needs either the Shotgun or Frag Grenade to open it. Both produce a lot of noise so if you know the Beast is in the area, be sure to hide or run away until the Beast goes. Inside this room, there is a grate that requires the Wrench to unlock. You need to move boxes out of the way to find it. The grate is located in the right corner of the room.
Whilst you are here, you can also flip the switch in the corner of this room and find loot (Pocket Bag) in the wall cabinet next to it.
Now that you are in this area, you will hear music playing through a radio. You need to go three rooms over until you have found a barred wall. This is padlocked shut, it can either be shot off using the Revolver or quietly taken down by the Bolt Cutters. If you use the Revolver, quickly head inside, shut the door behind you and then hide underneath the table on the right by crouching next to it.
This room is a save room so you can go ahead a pop a save and then turn the switch on in this room. Afterwards, head back to the Communications Room and go inside. The final switch you need to click on is in this room. The radio will come on after you interact with it by pushing the red button. Listen until the fourth digit of the code is read out.
