Roblox is a game that has become popular with younger gamers in the past decade. Most people may know it as the game with the “Oof” death sound which has been used in internet memes. This sound would normally play when a character died in-game. Unfortunately, the sound disappeared from the game last year due to an issue with licensing and has since been replaced with a far less popular alternative. In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what happened to the “Oof” sound in Roblox.
What Happened to Roblox ‘Oof’ Death Sound?
In 2020, it was revealed that Roblox’s “Oof” sound originated from the game Messiah, which was released in 2000. Former video game composer Tommy Tallarico, who worked on the game, discovered this and then reached a deal with Roblox. This deal would allow any user who creates a game within Roblox to use the “Oof” death sound for the price of $1, which is equal to 100 Robux. Tallarico would also Roblox develop original sound effects for the game. Regular Roblox users would still be able to hear the sound whenever their character died in-game.
For unknown reasons, it was later announced in 2022 that the “Oof” death sound would be removed entirely from the game and replaced by a new sound instead. The deal made with Tommy Tallarico must not have worked out, leading to the sound being removed from the game permanently. Roblox just described the removal as a licensing issue. The situation is controversial for fans of Roblox and even inspired a popular video from Yotuber hbomberguy.
