Suffer the Night is a clever concoction of part Text-Based Adventure, part Puzzle solving and part Dungeon Crawler. Going into this blind will leave you puzzled as to where this game is going. You play as Stacey, a woman who seems more concerned on how a stranger knows her name and not on how the man can extends his limbs and climb the side of her house. With varying levels of terror, there is something for everyone in this Horror Game. Whilst its horror is on the tamer side, its story is an interesting one. For a horror enthusiast like myself, nothing beats a good storyline to follow to keep your attention at all times. Wondering what this Horror Game is all about? We will get into the plot and endings of Suffer the Night. SPOILER WARNING for endings below.
Suffer the Night Story Explained
Suffer the Night has a mix of everything horror related, from its unique Text-Based Adventure at the beginning of the game to the all-out Dungeon Crawler when the horror truly kicks off. Whilst many may not be a fan of Text-Based like I am, it is a good way to break up the genre and is incredibly important to the story. Stacey is living her life, having an ordinary night, that is if you are not counting the terrible storm outside. With the powerlines being struck by lightning, it is hard to settle in for a cosy night in your cabin. But the storm is the least of your worries, in fact, the storm only exacerbates the situation. It is when the doorbell rings that the horror really begins and for the millennials of this world, there is nothing scarier than seeing a Floppy Disk arrive at the door.
The Prologue
This Horror Game is the nefarious equivalent of Jumanji. An ominous game falls becomes your property and out of sheer curiosity and boredom in this stormy night, you decide to pop the game on. As you are playing through this Text-Based Adventure, you are interrupted by the doorbell once more. This time however it is a man, dressed in fancy black and rocking a gigantic smile from ear to ear. He claims he needs somewhere to dry off for the night and if he could use the phone to get help. But in typical naïve protagonist ways, you reveal that the phones are cut off. Although you tell the man that he cannot come in, to no one’s surprise this man is not a man at all. With his rather proper accent, giving off Lucifer vibes, he climbs the side of your house like the mother in Hereditary.
He promises that if you finish his game he will leave you alone, but of course, this Text-Based Adventure was never the game he was referring to. Whilst he taunts you throughout, eventually Stacey finishes the game but in turn signs her soul away in the game’s Book. See where this is going? By Stacey signing her name in the Book, she is taken into the Video Game itself, the Dungeon Crawling universe where she must solve puzzles and battle her way out in search for the game’s code: Leviathan. Can Stacey make it out of this Video Game alive or will she become another faceless victim in the bottomless pit of the Dungeons?

Main Plot Explained
Suffer the Night truly begins when Stacey is dragged into the game. You quickly learn that this is the same game you were previously playing on Stacey’s PC but tailored towards her personal life and fears. From the Dungeons to the Funhouse, you need to get through booby-trapped rooms and solve puzzles to progress through the story. From the moment you get into the game however, you uncover a mysterious device that can rewrite the game’s code and bring what has been hidden back to life within the game. This will show you a lot of secret rooms, Tarot Cards, Floppy Disks and switches that can be used to turn off any booby-traps. It is imperative that you use this device whenever you can, especially in lethal moments where things can kill you.
Many in-game secrets can be found using this Device, these are the Floppy Disks and Tarot Cards. The Floppy Disks give you an insight into the past victim’s experience inside the game. Unfortunately no one has made it out alive. But the really interesting part of the story lies inside the Tarot Cards. These are placed inside Boxes typically found next to Save Stations. They provide you with more story as to how this game came to be made. You hear from the Developer of the game himself, who appears to have the same voice as the antagonist, coincidence? You quickly learn that the Developer found an ancient software with its code written in Latin, its writing appearing more like incantations than standard coding. But the Developer saw no problems in this, not even with the knowledge that the first founder of the Leviathan code, Dante had mysteriously disappeared. I have a feeling that the name Dante was picked on purpose being that the Leviathan code is the Dante’s Inferno.
Stacey find out through the Developer’s audio logs that the Leviathan code appears in the game as a Book (just like the Book you wrote in at the beginning of the game). You need to locate the Book and put an end to this haunting Video Game once and for all.
Suffer the Night Endings Explained – Spoilers Below
Everything you do within the game is a more complicated, longer journey than what you originally played on Stacey’s PC at the beginning of Suffer the Night. After going through many horrendous trials and tribulations, Stacey will get to the final stage where the Book is located and destroyed, the Cursed Blade is used to slash your palm and just when you think you are getting out of here, the antagonist makes his final appearance. This is where the big reveal of the antagonist’s true identity is discovered being that he has taken the Developer and is using his body as a vessel to take people from the real world into his game. With the body of the Developer, you realise that you had been played this entire time, from the moment you signed your soul over to what is literally Satan trapped in a Video Game.
Stacey had played right into Mr Top’s hands with his ultimate goal being that she freed Mr Tops from the Lethiathan’s code so he can enter the real world with complete freedom to do whatever he pleases inside his new vessel, Stacey. The final Boss Fight ensues where Mr Tops reveals his true form, winged and armed with a scyther. Stacey takes a step back, pulls out her Magnum and takes the beast on once and for all.
Good Ending Explained
When Mr Tops is taken out, Stacey heads to the final door in Suffer the Night. This can only be opened however if you found all 12 Tarot Cards through your journey. The room reveals the final form of the Developer and what became of him after Mr Tops took him as a vessel. The Developer tells you that the final Leviathan code can be found underneath the stairwell and if you destroy it, Mr Tops and himself would be eradicated from history. The problem is however, Stacey too could be lost forever, with her mind destroyed but her real body frozen in a state of limbo in the real world. Stacey shoots the PC, in hopes that she will awake once more, back in the real world.
The plan works and Stacey awakes anew in the real world having survived Suffer the Night. Morning has come and the violent storm remains in the past alongside Mr Tops and the Developer. In her final action, she stomps on Suffer the Night Floppy Disk. Damn right Stacey, damn right.
Bad Ending Explained
The Bad Ending is achieved if you do not have all 12 Tarot Cards or if you ignore this door and continue down the passageway. You find the portal Mr Tops uses to get into the real world and how he brought Stacey and his past victims in to begin with. Without never meeting the Developer, Stacey takes the portal as her escape. But as you know, Mr Tops was never defeated and with the Leviathan code in tact, Mr Tops takes Stacey as his vessel. Stacey mind is tormented and torn apart by the physical changes of seeing her body transforming into Mr Tops in front of her eyes. The worst bit? Whilst Mr Tops takes her body, her mind remains, screaming “No” as she realises that Mr Tops has won.
