Fears to Fathom – Carson House Story and Ending Explained

Exes and drugs are a bad combination

Rayll’s third episode of the Fears to Fathom Anthology follows Noah Baker, a teenager looking to earn some extra cash through house-sitting. What should have been a pleasant weekend earning a couple hundred bunks turns dark and twisted. Carson’s House is a different view in Rayll’s usual home invasion horror entries. In this episode, with its fuller run time, Carson House adds backstory and motive to the invasion. With many red herrings causing paranoia, fuelling the horrors before the dreaded climax, Carson House is Rayll’s best game so far. This is our explanation of the Fears to Fathom – Carson House story and its ending.

The Story

The Dream

Carson House begins with Noah inviting us into a horrible past trauma he experienced 10 years ago when taking a job offer from his father. The job is to house-sit for a weekend for his father’s client, Roy Carson who is COO of a Media Company. What we find out later about Roy is crucial to the narrative and horror of Carson House. The game begins inside the Laundromat which we soon realise is a dream. What is interesting about this location is that when you peer outside the Laundromat doors and windows you will see a silver car drive past. We later realise that this car belongs to the invader. What does this mean? Well for Noah to be dreaming this, it implies that he knows on some level, who the invader is.

This gives us some kind of motivation already on explaining what later happens to Noah. However, at this point in time, players are not aware that this car belongs to anyone in particular. Noah awakes from his nightmare, realising he had fallen asleep in his dad’s car. Now at Roy Carson’s House, the objective is to locate the key and head on inside. As you leave your father, you gain access to checking your Phone messages. These are crucial to adding backstory to Noah and those within his inner circle. One of which is Evelyn. You find out from older conversations that Noah used to date a girl named Cara and you can tell from what is written that this relationship did not end well. This is the first bit of crucial information you learn.

Inside the House

After getting inside the House, your simple house-sitting job takes a turn for the worst. The gameplay turns towards completing errands for Roy. Such as feeding his sick dog and going grocery shopping. What is interesting about these chores is that Roy could easily do them. However, he is not. This is a red flag due to the fact that there is a very important reason as to why Roy cannot do these tasks by himself. You later find out that the reason why Roy does not do these things himself is because he is being harassed. By doing a quick search online for Roy Carson, as Andy suggests for Noah to do so. You find out that Roy had a very public divorce with his now ex-wife, Allison.

Roy Carson

Whilst this does not sound like a big deal in itself, you read on to find out that Roy had receive death threats from die-hard fans of Allison. With fans going so far as to find out where Roy lives and knock at his front door. This places the first red herring inside your mind. That one of the crazy Allison fans is breaking into the house to take revenge on Roy for his “behavior” as a husband.

This is also confirmed by Roy’s expensive and intricate Home Security System which has a room designated solely to watch the Monitors of both the interior and exterior windows. Some would think that Roy was a paranoid guy. But it is likely that these were installed to deter the fans from approaching his house. Or worse, installed in case something actually happened to him. Roy asks for Noah to take his son’s bicycle and grab groceries for him. Clearly he cannot do that himself anymore without being stalked or perhaps attacked in public.

“Your Girl is Back in Town”

At Knacks, the grocery store, you find two classmates: Turner and Andy. They tell you that your ex-girlfriend has returned to Town, with enough alcohol that they assume is for some party she is hosting. Red flag number 2. After speaking with them further, you find out a bit more information on Alec (Roy’s Son). He is described as a “weirdo” and our only means of diving deeper into this is through Alec’s Computer. In the Recycle Bin you can restore a short video Alec Carson (Roy’s son) has directed as a ‘Self Help’ video titled ‘Guide to Being a Better Person’.

Upon watching this creepy video, the words ‘we are sinking’ flash up several times against a faceless man. Is this an expression of Alec’s current mental state from his parents getting a divorce? “Being an asshole will discourage people from talking to you” and “now even though what he said was controversial did you remain calm?” appear on the screen. Are these Alec’s thoughts on hearing about his parents splitting from Roy himself? These are our interpretations. However, once again in regard to the final message of Carson House, this video does not have much to do with it. It is in fact another red herring to keep your mind occupied on Roy Carson and his family.

The Pizza Guy

After coming back to Carson’s House from the grocery store, you return to continue your work in the Security Room. However there is a knock at the door. It is a Pizza Delivery Guy but you did not order any pizza. Red flag number 3. Whilst we find out that this was ordered by Roy as a reward for helping him out with his errands, prior to this, this moment acts to horrify you. After reading all about the harassing and Allison fans visiting the house, you wonder: is this a real Pizza Delivery Guy or is he pretending to be one? If you were watching the exterior cameras you may as times see something shift in the background. Moving out of the corner of your screen.

There appears to be someone at all times wandering around the house as you eat the pizza or stare at the Monitors. This has been the case since returning home from the grocery store. What this tells you is that someone followed you home. For this reason alone, it cannot be related to Roy Carson and those psychotic fans. Someone is at the door again. But this time you cannot see them as you check the Camera Feed. Instead you can only make out a bouquet of flowers left on the doorstep. Is this one of Allison’s fans? No it cannot be as the intruder appeared just after Noah got home. So it is motivated by twisted love.

The Power Outage

As Noah is trying to complete his schoolwork, the power cuts out. You begin receiving texts from an unknown sender who clearly knows you but you ignore it for now. It is only until you fix the power that everything begins to escalate. Someone is now inside the house. This appears after the Unknown Sender replies “fine… I don’t need u anyways.” Making the Sender the one who is now inside the house. Thinking it is Turner from the grocery store, Noah returns to doing his schoolwork in the Security Room. But Noah hears a sound from downstairs. Someone is messing with the appliances and taking knives from the Kitchen.

When you reach out to Andy, he confirms that Turner is staying round his. All signs are pointing towards one individual that Noah had forgotten about. Cara, the ex-girlfriend. The guys said she had bought a lot of alcohol and had just left by the time Noah arrived. If you had paid attention to your surrounding you would have seen her car parked outside the grocery store. Later appearing outside of Carson’s House after your trip. Finally, the antagonist has revealed herself. But it is too late, for she is inside the house.

The Ending

When Cara makes her way to the Security Room door, she knocks as she cannot get in. You engage with a conversation with her, where Noah tells her to leave or he will call the Police. Cara in fury, threatens to kill both Noah and his new girlfriend, Evelyn. Noah hides in the Storage Closet and waits until Cara heads into the room he was just in. In a small moment of safety, Noah takes it to run to the staircase and flee the house.

We find out that Noah met Cara off a dating website online. Their relationship was ruined due to the change in Cara as she became addicted to drugs. As we noted from the interaction with Turner and Andy in the grocery store, Cara was drinking before invading Carson’s House. She mixed alcohol with the drugs she had become addicted to, sending her down a lethal spiral which she tried to take out on Noah in a fit of revenge. Whilst Cara tried to get out of the situation, the cameras Roy had installed was more than enough evidence to put Cara away for a very long time.
