Where to Find Magnetite in Subnautica: Below Zero

Futuristic sci-fi technology often seems to make extensive use of magnets. Y’know, things like railguns, mag-lifts, polarity shields, and other neat stuff like that. Of course, magnets don’t grow on trees; no, they grow at the bottom of the ocean, at least if Subnautica: Below Zero is any indication. Here’s where to find Magnetite in Subnautica: Below Zero.

Magnetite is a raw material used in the construction of a variety of different tools and habitat apparatuses in Subnautica: Below Zero. It’s not especially difficult to track down, but because it’s a component in so many crafting recipes, you do need a lot of it, so it never hurts to have a lead on where exactly you can source some.

Magnetite can spawn in all of the following biomes:

  • Crystal Caves
  • Deep Lilypads Cave
  • East Arctic
  • Glacial Basin
  • Glacial Connection
  • West Arctic

Unlike other ores, you won’t find magnetite in specific outcroppings. It just sort of… pops up in particular places, usually along the seabed and on the walls and ceiling of caves. The Deep Lilypads Cave in particular is a great place to look for Magnetite, as not only can you find standalone chunks of it, you can also get lucky and find a full on vein of the stuff. You can also find some by sending a Spy Pengling into tiny crevices.

As for its purpose, Magnetite is a component of the following eight crafting recipes:

  • Prawn Suit Propulsion Cannon
  • Vortex Torpedo
  • Thumper
  • Thermal Plant
  • Executive Toy
  • Scanner Room HUD Chip
  • Scanner Room Range Upgrade
  • Snowfox

To craft all of these recipes, you’ll need a grand total of 11 chunks of Magnetite ore, so start skimming those cave walls for it.
