Return to Monkey Island sets out to tell the story of how Guybrush Threepwood finally discovered the Secret of Monkey Island, but he’ll need to overcome several obstacles to reach his goal. One of these obstacles is brewing a potion that allows a ship to reach the fabled island. LeChuck has already collected most of the ingredients, but the concoction is still missing one essential ingredient.
How To Finish the Potion
Putra, LeChuck’s cook, has prepared the potion in a cauldron on the main deck of LeChuck’s ship. She mentions all the ingredients they’ve already assembled in the brew, including squid ink and monkey’s blood. Only one final piece is missing to complete the potion: a flattened skull. The rest of the crew are busy with their own jobs, so Quartermaster Rose tasks a disguised Guybrush with finding the skull.
You’ll first need to find the skull, so head back down to the hold where Gullet had you swabbing the deck. If you try to go through the lower deck, Gullet will catch you and throw you into the hold himself. Alternatively, you can climb back over the side of the ship and sneak back in through the greased-up window. Open the crate in the hold to find Murray the demon skull.
Flatten Murray
Murray has stowed away on LeChuck’s ship to spy on the ghost-zombie pirate for Captain Madison, and he’s ticked that you’ve revealed his hiding spot. You can either convince him to come along with you, or you can just take him against his will.

Once you’ve got Murray in your inventory, get to the lower deck by way of the main deck and approach the laundry press to the right of the ramp. Open your inventory and drag Murray over to the laundry press. With a quick apology, Guybrush will run Murray through the press, effectively flattening him.
Go back to the potion on the main deck of the ship and throw Murray in to complete the potion. Once you do, Gullet will storm the deck in anger and spill the potion, initiating the next puzzle. Make sure to pick up Murray, as you’ll need him to solve the next part of Chapter 2.
