The final day of the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational Group Stage ended as most fans would have expected, with Damwon KIA and Cloud9 advancing to the Rumble stage. The stakes were incredibly high for the three teams vying for second place, with close matches by Cloud9 and DetonatioN FocusMe only fueling the suspense. The results are shown below, as well as the teams advancing to the double round-robin Rumble stage later this week.

North America Shows Up
With NA’s history, many were unsurprised should Cloud9 go winless against the 2020 World Champions. However, in a banger of an opening game, the NA representatives not only matched the Korean titans but also played into the lategame, an area thought to be Korea’s speciality because of its teams’ precise teamfighting and objective management. By winning this single game, Cloud9 catapulted themselves to be the frontrunner favorites out of the three 1-2 record teams to make it out of groups.
In addition to taking a game off of Damwon KIA, it was imperative for Cloud9 to even out the head-to-head record against DetonatioN FocusMe later that day. If DFM won against C9 again, it would solidify DFM to advance if both teams ended with the same record. Although the match between the Japanese and North American representatives began closely, everything spiraled out of control when DFM kept dropping neutral objectives and Cloud9 implemented the roaming goon squad strategy, constantly taking skirmishes and ganking in unexpected areas.
World Champions Showing Weakness
At the end of the day, Damwon KIA manages to advance as the 1st place seed in Group C with a record of 5-1. However, it would be a mistake to assume that the team is an infallible beast of a contender. Out of all the Tier 1 teams, Damwon is on par with Royal Never Give Up when it comes to the level of dominance compared to the rest of the competition within each teams’ respective groups. Not only did DWK drop a game to North America, but there were also a few games where DWK struggled against DFM. DWK could have easily ended the group stage with a 4-2 record or even a 3-3 record in the worst-case scenario.
Congratulations to the six teams who will be participating in the Rumble Stage! Cloud9 from the LCS, Damwon KIA from the LCK, MAD Lions from the LEC, Pentanet GG from the OCE, PSG Talon from the PCS and Royal Never Give Up from the LPL! The Rumble will start on Friday at 9 am EST, with matchup details to be determined. Â
