League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational Day 4 Results

With day four coming to a close, the finals standing for Group A have been decided. The LPL representatives Royal Never Give Up will be advancing with a flawless 8-0 record while the OCE team Pentanet GG had to fight tooth and nail to secure the second-place spot. The Unicorns of Love were eliminated from the tournament but deserve recognition for being the CIS representatives.

Underdogs to Rumble

Pentanet GG started off the tournament with an 0-3 record. If they were in any other group, this fact alone may have made their situation unrecoverable, but because they were in Group A with a quadruple round-robin (due to VCT travel issues), they still had a fighting chance. Out of all the teams in Group A, Pentanet GG displayed the most unusual picks, including Ahri, Qiyana, and Zed. The willingness of the team to choose the 3rd or 4th best pick just to throw off its opponents will make the team slightly unpredictable. But just like most games, League of Legends is a game of inches that snowball.

LPL Domination

When it comes to gambling, Royal Never Give Up probably had 19:1 chances to advance past the group stage. Those odds increased with the absence of the VCS, whose region is known to commonly upset major teams at international events. The LPL reps could have rested easily at five wins, as no other team in the group could have come close to contesting the behemoths. However, they continued to show respect and played out the rest of their games in their usual form instead of ‘trolling’ or playing around with champions or strategy. Although their group may have been a tad bit easier than others, RNG is still a fearsome opponent for anybody in the Rumble Stage.
