In 2019’s A Plague Tale: Innocence, players were introduced to Amicia de Rune and her brother, Hugo. As both Amicia and Hugo vie to escape from the inquisition, they must also fend off a persistent sickness. In the sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, the siblings’ journey continues as they seek a cure to Hugo’s illness. But, unforeseen complications make way for more inconveniences for Amicia and Hugo. To some players, it might make sense to let us play as Hugo in addition to Amicia. Read on to find out if you can play as Hugo in A Plague Tale: Requiem, or if it’s — to some degree — a solo trip for Amicia.
Is Hugo Playable in A Plague Tale: Requiem?
It does not appear so. In A Plague Tale: Requiem, like in Innocence, the sole playable character is Amicia. To some end, this makes the most sense given Hugo’s ability to control plague rats. If you were to ask this writer, having such an ability for the entire game might make some obstacles easier than intended. This is especially true if Requiem is meant to be predominantly a stealth adventure.
That said, there’s nothing stopping developers Asobo Studio from releasing a future DLC story featuring Hugo as the main playable character. It could resemble — in some ways, anyway — the brief segment of The Last of Us (part I) where you control Ellie while Joel is out of commission. But, until that possibility is realized, players are limited to playing as Amicia in A Plague Tale: Requiem.
