God of War Ragnarök, just like its predecessor, is massive. The game promises dozens of hours of fun and, well, intense violence and memorable moments for the franchise and the video game history. Already gathering critical acclaim and earning the more than fitting title of masterpiece, many fans are wondering if God of War Ragnarök is an open world game. See, in recent years, “open world” have sometimes been equalled to quality, and more and more games try to incorporate this to their games, whether it be well implemented or not (with a huge open world, albeit barren and devoid of life), well, that’s another issue. So, seeing that God of War Ragnarök packs a lot of content, is God of War Ragnarök open world?
Is God of War Ragnarök Open World?
So, the answer is not a straightforward one. If you want the short answer, then God of War Ragnarök is not an open world game. However, if you want the longer answer, then God of War Ragnarök does offer a lot of freedom regarding whether you follow the main story or commit yourselves to the side missions. In fact, it embraces this freedom more than God of War (2018), which brings more variety and, well, an open world type of experience to the table. Now, don’t expect to visit all available areas or go straight to the final boss like BOTW. The game will block further progression depending on what part of the story you are located or what type of gear you have discovered.
So if you wanted an open world God of War game, you will have to wait for another installment in the franchise. However, open world does not really translate to masterpiece like I said. Without incorporating an open world mechanic, God of War Ragnarök is already a major contendent for game of the year (alongside Elden Ring for example), and that’s something that is very hard to achieve. Enjoy your games without prejudice or predetermined mindset, enjoy them for what they are and what they wish to express. I guarantee you that you won’t be disappointed.
