Hypixel SkyBlock is an incredibly popular online server that reinvents the classic experience of skyblock. Such a dramatic revamp it is, that it feels strange to call it ‘skyblock’ due to how stripped back and basic the source material is. This game will have you fighting bosses, designing the private island of your dreams, and collecting 50,000 potatoes. Here is all you need to know when starting out in Hypixel SkyBlock.
Beginner’s guide to hypixel SkyBlock
This game is huge, so I will not be covering all the bases. I will, however, be telling you everything I wish I knew when starting out for an easier transition.
Your private island
When starting out, you will spawn in your very own floating island in a void. This is practically your own world to expand without limits. Nearby is another island with an NPC, a cobblestone minion, and a portal. If you walk down the stairs you’ll find the classic beginner’s chest for SkyBlock.
The portal takes you to the Hub, the central space for hypixel SkyBlock where you will be spending a lot of your time.
You can do whatever you want with you island, and can tap into the other aspects of the game as much or as little as you want.
Minions
That cobblestone minion sitting there will slowly gather cobblestone, even if you’re away, acting as an auto-generator. For every block and item that you can mine and harvest yourself, there is a minion for it. The minions can be upgraded to increase their speed and storage space, and even given special upgrades to enhance their abilities.
You can only have a certain number of total minions, and can unlock more slots up to 24. The minions can be crafted by yourself using the material they will be hunting for. The minions must be placed in a clear space to work.
These guys essentially allow you to grind resources even when you are off the game, allowing for faster progression. This is essential for progression.
The Hub
The Hub is one huge map where you will find these basic things: NPCs to trade with, other players to interact with, zones and areas to interact with, and teleporters to other areas. You can also do things like enchanting, banking, and more.

When beginning, thoroughly explore this area. There are zones that you will need to visit to begin progressing and there are NPCs that you will want the services of. some zones are there specifically for you to farm and mine resources, from wood to coal to wheat to cobblestone, etc. You can also fight zombies for rotten flesh.

Levels upon levels upon levels
Hypixel SkyBlock can also be summarised as a grinding game. You have a SkyBlock Level that you gain though achieving levels in its many systems. You get collection levels for collecting items and skill levels to performing actions.
Every block and item (with a few exceptions) that can be collected by you has a ‘collection’ level. The more you collect of the item, the more you level up with it. With each level you will unlock new crafting recipes that involve that item, some which be necessary for whatever you want to do.
There are also skills, from Runecrafting to Mining to Combat to Carpentry to Taming, to everything in between. The more of certain actions you do, the more you level up that skill. Levelling up skills is very important. Not only will you gain more fortune for each level, but you will unlock other areas, skill-locked items, and your base stats will increase.
With these leveling system, Hypixel SkyBlock is essentially a very versatile level-grinder, where players will have to grind certain activities to increase their level to unlock recipes and areas, and to become stronger. To prevent this from becoming too boresome, players will have to make use of minions, special items, and other players.
Other miscellaneous notes
Here is a quick list of things you should know:
- You can craft every normal Minecraft block and item as well as the Hypixel SkyBlock blocks and items
- You can create other ‘profiles’ that act essentially as new characters and new islands
- You can do as much or as little of the level grinding as you want
- The game is still under development, so there will be new content as the devs get around to it
- If ever you are confused, navigating the SkyBlock Menu (the nether star in your inventory) may clear some things up
- Any items you drop in the Hub cannot be seen nor picked up by other players
