How to Use the Crab Pots in DREDGE – Crab Catching Guide

Be careful of those pinchers

There is something quite calming about a Fishing Simulator. It is probably why this type of simulation is used in games such as Animal Crossing, it trying does relax the soul. On the surface, DREDGE appears to be that sort of game, an Animal Crossing-type Fishing Simulation. Whilst you start at the bottom, working with the bare minimum of fishing equipment, barely appropriate for a Sailor like you, things are not as they seem. Within the deep, deep Ocean, chaos lies waiting for a naïve Fisherman to sail into its open arms. Whether you are trying to gain the most money possible to pay for upgrades on your Boat, or looking to find all species of fish across the Regions, this is our guide on how to use the Crab Pots in DREDGE.

Crab Pot Purposes and Where to Buy

Crab Pots are just one of the many ways you can fish in DREDGE. But like in real life, going Crabbing is never done via the use of a Fishing Rod or Trawl Net, rather it is done through the use of Crab Pots. Unlike other fishing methods however, using the Crab Pots is a longer process due to the waiting period in which you need to bait the Crabs to get caught within the Pots for you to then fish them out.

Before you even attempt Crabbing, you will need to purchase some Crab Pots to begin with. These can be bought at the Fishmonger, where a Basic Crab Pot costs $100. Its downside is that it can only hold up to 2 Crabs at a time, so you will need to visit the Pot regularly, especially as its use only lasts for 2 days. So when you place a Crab Pot down, be sure to regularly visit the Pot so that you can gain the most out of its 2 day duration. You should also refer to the time of day you submerge the Pots so you are aware of when the Pot will become unusable. When it is unusable, you will need to repair them with the Shipwright to use them again for the 2 day period.

How to Use Crab Pots in DREDGE

To start the Crab Pot process, you need to head into your Boat Interaction Wheel, this is where you would turn on your Boat Lights for exploring the Ocean at night. Select Crab Pot on the Wheel to begin the process. For those playing on PC, you will need to drop Pots into the water by pressing the right-mouse button. On Console it is ‘X’ for Xbox players, ‘Square’ for PlayStation and ‘Y’ on Nintendo Switch. When hunting for Crabs, each species has a different depth, refer to the bottom-left corner of your screen when you are placing Crab Pots for the depth in which the Pot will fall. For those just getting started in DREDGE, we recommend dropping Pots to a total depth of 5.0m (meters).

When you drop a Crab Pot, you will see a small buoy that will appear on the water’s surface, above where you dropped the Pot, this acts as a visual guide for your Crab Pot location. We recommend placing Crab Pots in separate locations and not close together as your Pot should be emptied regularly to pick up the Crabs within the area you submerged the Pot. In Greater Marrow and Stellar Basin, you will want to place these predominately along the Island’s perimeter for the 5.0m depth requirement.

How Often Should you Check for Crabs Caught in the Pots?

Players should check their Crab Pots between the 6-12 hour period, referring to the in-game Day-Night schedule. To check the Crab Pots, sail over to them and get within close proximity of the buoy. You will see the Crab Pot white icon appear above the buoy. Interact with the icon to see if there is a Crab inside. If there is, move it into your Cargo Hold as if it was a fish you just caught via the Fishing Rod.
