When Nintendo released the expansion pack for Nintendo Switch Online, they promised many previous generation games would be brought to this new tier of NSO. Fast forward to April of 2023, and along with the plethora of games already included, they added the N64 classic Pokémon Stadium to NSO. From fighting with all the 151 original Pokémon, to hanging out and playing mini-games, it’s all here. However, the layout of the N64 controller is wildly different from Nintendo’s current-gen console. Since this game was essentially ported to the Switch, the control prompts still show up for the games original console. Causing much confusion for players as they try to navigate the game blind. Never fear Pokémon trainers, we are going to be figuring out how to use the controls in Pokémon Stadium for Nintendo Switch.
How To Use The Controls In Pokémon Stadium for Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo 64’s controller layout is a bit foreign by todays standards. Comparing it to the Switch joy-cons or pro controller, you might notice a lot less buttons on the Switch. Who knows why Nintendo decided to include a joystick in the middle of the controller. But now, it’s up to us to decode this puzzle so we can battle with other trainers. Even though Nintendo includes a digital user guide for their N64 games, it seems as if the guide for Pokémon Stadium is not entirely correct. Thankfully not every control is incorrect.

The A and B buttons on your switch controller still correspond to the respective buttons in the game. Like those buttons, your R and L triggers should also work fine in game. Where this starts to fall apart is when the game wants you to use the N64’s yellow directional buttons. Obviously there aren’t any yellow buttons like that for the switch, but all hope is not lost. You will be able to use the Switch’s right joystick for any yellow directional buttons in Pokémon Stadium. For example, if you’re trying to add a Charmander to your active lineup and you need to press the right yellow arrow, move the right joystick to the right. It’s now up to you to face your foe in the arena, and hope that the button layout is the most of your worries.
