You can now craft legendary loot for your characters in World of Warcraft‘s latest expansion, Shadowlands. The Runecarver is the key to this new feature, and you’ll find him in Torghast, at the heart of The Maw. In addition to crafting powerful gear, players can also upgrade legendaries in World of Warcraft Shadowlands. It’s a relatively straightforward process, and we’ll go over how to do it in this step-by-step guide.
It’s reasonable to want to craft a lower item level legendary as soon as possible and upgrade it as you get enough materials. Legendaries can go all the way up to rank 4, with rank 1 being the lowest tier. You don’t spend any additional Soul Ash this way, as it will always require 400 to get your items to rank 4. Soul Ash is capped at 100 per week, anyhow. The only additional expense is the gold or materials you’ll spend to obtain another base crafting item for each level.
How to Upgrade Legendaries in World of Warcraft Shadowlands
There are three requirements for upgrading your legendary armor in Shadowlands. You’ll need the base crafting item, along with a Rune Vessel and the proper amount of Soul Ash. Note, you need one base crafting item for each additional upgrade. There are four different ranks for legendary armor, so it helps understanding how they work and the corresponding item levels. Here are the ranks:
- Rank 1 (iLevel 190): 1250 Soul Ash
- Rank 2 (iLevel 210): 2000 Soul Ash
- Rank 3 (iLevel 225): 3200 Soul Ash
- Rank 4 (iLevel 235): 5150 Soul Ash
If it’s your first time crafting a legendary, you’ll need to complete “The Final Pieces” quest. Here are the specific base item names that you can purchase on the Auction House (or craft):
- Plate – Shadowghast
- Mail – Boneshatter
- Leather – Umbrahide
- Cloth – Grim-Veiled
- Amulet/Ring – Shadowghast
Head to the Runecarver with your items, who guides you through the process of upgrading your legendary items. Put your materials in the slots and click on upgrade. As long as you have all the appropriate materials, your new legendary will craft. The decision of whether you want to wait to craft the rank 4 legendary right off the bat, or progressively upgrade it, is up to you.
