How to Unlock All Endings in Octopath Traveler 2

Not all stories end the same way.

In a traditional fantasy story, even one with a larger cast, there’s only one general ending that a story can reach, usually based on whoever our protagonist is. Octopath Traveler 2, however, has eight de facto protagonists, which means we need to get a little more creative with what we consider to be an “ending” to their collective stories. Here’s how to unlock all endings in Octopath Traveler 2.

How to Unlock All Endings in Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler 2, much like the first game, doesn’t follow a strictly linear narrative format, at least at first. While the eight members of your party are traveling together, they each have their own stories to pursue and goals to accomplish. Ergo, every single character in your party has their own ending to reach.

Each character’s individual story is made up of three chapters, which you can begin at designated locations around the world. Once you start a chapter of a character’s story, you need to see it through to the end, which, outside of a few special cases, is punctuated by a boss fight. Every character’s story is made up of four chapters, and clearing all four of those chapters will finish that character’s story and show you their individual ending sequence and screen. Since these are all self-contained stories, you can technically leave the matter at that once they’re all finished, but if you want to know the stories’ connecting factors, you can take it further.

Unlocking the True Ending

In order to unlock the game’s true ending and bring all of the characters’ stories to a singular conclusion, you’ll first need to fulfill a couple of requirements. The first one is completing all the characters’ stories, which you’ve presumably done already, but the second is completing all the Crossed Paths stories. These are special sidequests where two of your party members team up for a connected story.

Each Crossed Paths story is made up of two parts, with the first unlocking after beating the second chapter in the relevant characters’ stories, and the second opening up after the relevant characters have had their stories completed. The Crossed Paths story pairs and locations are as follows:

  • The Dancer & Warrior: Agnea and Hikari. Part 1 is in Ryo, Part 2 is in Ku.
  • The Scholar & Merchant: Osvald and Partitio. Part 1 is in New Delsta, Part 2 is in Montwise.
  • The Cleric & Thief: Temenos and Throne. Part 1 is in Flamechurch, Part 2 is in Conning Creek.
  • The Apothecary & Hunter: Castti and Ochette. Both parts are in Cropdale.

Once all the regular stories and Crossed Paths stories have been completed, then you can begin the Extra Stories, a sequence of quests that will culminate in a showdown with the final boss and the true ending. You can begin these quests from the campsite on the Southern Cropdale Trail in the Leaflands, after which subsequent quests will be marked on your map as usual. Just a heads up, once you start the Extra Stories, you cannot complete any sidequests until they are finished. If you were planning on doing any side grinding before the final boss, do it beforehand.

If you can defeat the true final boss, you’ll get to watch the game’s true ending, where you’ll experience a culmination of your work on every character’s stories and their relationship as a team. It’s all quite beautiful, really, as it should be for all the work you put in!
