Suffer the Night Beginner’s Guide – Tips and Tricks on How to Play

If you are just getting started with Suffer the Night you may be wondering why a Beginner’s Guide is being made for this game and honestly when I began I thought that this would not be an appropriate article to write. My reasoning for this was that the prologue of Suffer the Night is incredibly linear and one that has no puzzles or an opportunity for exploration. Playing as Stacey inside her home really had only one route for players to complete. Everything that happens is meant to happen and whilst you have the ability to look behind your shoulder when playing the Text-Based Adventure Game, you will not be able to do more than this really. It is until Stacey is captured and placed inside the Video Game itself that the real game begins.

Suffer the Night truly begins around the 35 minute mark and it is when Stacey awakes inside the Dungeon for the first time that you will quickly learn that this game will be no simple task. Whilst you can go through this game avoiding monsters and evading booby-traps, there is a better way to beat Suffer the Night.

Use the Scanner to its Full Potential

The Scanner is by far the most important item you will get in this game. This can be found inside a Coffin at the beginning of Stacey being inside the Suffer the Night Video Game. The Scanner reveals hidden passages and items that can be used as a shortcut or a way to completely avoid death. When using the Scanner, you need to use its Search Mode and peer through the Lens. Notice all alcoves within a room and in corridors, these can be hiding a secret within. You will get used to using the Scanner as you need to utilize its abilities immediately after you pick the important item up.

But it is the areas that are not completely obvious that a secret is hidden behind a wall or underneath some debris that the Scanner truly thrives. You should use the Scanner’s Search Mode whenever you are in a room that has a puzzle or distinctive object/structure inside. For example, inside the room where skeletal remains and parts of corpses can be found, you must pick up the intact body parts and place inside the grinder to get to the other side of the door. But, if you use the Scanner here, you can find an important secret. The secret that is incredibly important to find are the Tarot Cards. The reason for this is that they are essential to find to get the Good Ending in Suffer the Night. In total, you need to locate 12 Cards and these can only be found using the Scanner.

Whenever you are stuck inside a room, be it by a puzzle or in a room filled with monsters and booby-traps, utilize the Scanner to locate a solution that can save your life. These will often be a secret path towards a switch that will turn the booby-traps off or can simply be the outline of the switch itself placed somewhere on the wall. Always be on the lookout for the purple outline which will either be the a rectangle for the Tarot Card, an outline framing a portion of the wall as if a door was there, or a square for the switch location. Puzzles such as getting the Magnum can easily be solved by using the Scanner instead of trying your luck by guessing the symbols on the dial instead.

Conserve Ammo Whenever you Can

Ammo is incredibly important in this game as there are many times where you will need to use the Magnum in order to get through the enemies in the area. Most of the time, you cannot run through and so you will need to find a way to quickly knock out what is in front of you. Whenever you can, use the Crowbar against the enemies. The specific enemies that you should use the Crowbar on are Bosses that you can stun such as the Chainsaw wielding Rabbit, or against weaker enemies such as the Skeleton Soldiers. You should only use Magnum bullets against smaller enemies that are difficult to invade or deal a ton of damage such as the wind-up Bunnies that explode when close to Stacey.

Most of the time however, you should try to evade from the monsters and utilize the booby-traps to deal damage against the enemies instead of you getting close with the Crowbar or shooting bullets with the Magnum/Shotgun. Luring enemies towards you and getting them to walk into the traps will mean that you only need to get in a couple of Crowbar hits to take them out instead of the usual 3 for Skeletons or 6 Bullets for the moving Corpses.

Ammo is sparse and can only really be found by locating a Tarot Card and opening their corresponding Box. You can find both Magnum and Shotgun Ammo and it can be super helpful to search for the Tarot Cards to build up your Ammo counter before the final Boss Fight in Suffer the Night. Some enemies should not be fought at all, such as the crawling Corpses which you may need to try and take an item from through using stealth only. These moments result in chase scenes but so long as you stay looking in front and always moving, you will be able to get away without taking any damage.
