In the latest 1.5 update for Stardew Valley there’s a new area called the Ginger Island. It introduces a bunch of interesting puzzles to keep players occupied. At the Southern point of the map there’s a Mermaid on a rock. While it may not be obvious there’s something to do here, trust us there’s a Mermaid Puzzle hiding in plain sight!
How to Solve the Mermaid Puzzle
Once you’re in the vicinity of the Mermaid make sure to take note of your surroundings. Close to the rocks that line the southern shore is a brick with a musical note engraved on it.
If you recall in the Midnight Market, there’s a Mermaid Song that you can hear in her boat that’s played with a flute. So combining our knowledge so far we know we need a flute of some kind.
To solve the puzzle you need to be able to craft the furniture piece called a Flute Block. The Flute Block is usually only an aesthetic thing to put on your island which will make music when you walk by it. To unlock this recipe you need to have Robin at friend level 6. If you don’t have her there yet, go do that first!
Now craft five flute blocks and head back to the mermaid.
The Journal Page Clue
On Rainy Days in the Pirate Cove on the beach you can find a Journal Page which will give you extra detail into what the puzzle needs to be solved. The journal entry reads:
“Twas a rain drenched day and upon a lonely rock a beautiful maiden saw I
Journal Page 9
Tales I’d heard of sea-born maidens singing siren’s songs,
Yet nary a note could she muster…
The next morning I spied an arrangement of stone upon the foamy bank…
Aye stones as big as pennies and stones as big as nickels were they…
If this harried sea dog a tune could howl, perhaps to Blackgull’s treasure”
On The Mermaid Beach
Now, we have all the answers to the puzzle. You may be thinking to yourself that we don’t. Trust us! It’s all right here. Do you see the stones on the bottom near the Mermaid? Here’s an image below highlighting what we’re talking about.
Thinking back to the journal page that we got prior, “stones as pennies and stones as big as nickels” is our next clue. Pennies are 1 cent and nickels are 5 cents. So by this logic we can assume that the big rocks represent nickels and the little ones represent pennies.
These numbers represent how many times we have to tune the flute blocks that we made. So placing the blocks next to the stones from left to right and tune them in this order. Placing the block counts as one click.

Now run past the blocks and play the beautiful Mermaid song! She will smile and wave to you and toss over five Golden Walnuts!
After finishing this puzzle you’re home free for the most part. There’s not going to be any puzzle as vague and mysterious as this one on Ginger Island. So just continue to explore and earn those Golden Walnuts along the way!
