A woman trapped in a swamp with a witch is always a recipe for disaster. And in Baldur’s Gate 3, disaster is bound to find it’s way to you one way or another. During the first act of the game, there are a plethora of side activities to get into. Some of them are entirely disconnected from the larger story, while others can progress the narrative. One of these quests involves a character you’ll most likely have already met, and it can get very ugly. So let’s traverse through the mirror and figure out how to save Mayrina in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).
How to Save Mayrina in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)
There are a myriad of alternate tidbits and tasks you can find and complete within this objective, but we’ll just be giving you the short rundown. Arriving at the Riverside Teahouse, you’ll witness an interaction between the captive Mayrina and Auntie Ethel. If you haven’t already pick up on it, dear old Auntie Ethel isn’t what she seems. This conversation can play out a few ways, however at some point, Ethel will teleport Mayrina away. Through all this, you’ll want to focus on the fireplace in the middle of the room, as it is an illusion. Players who didn’t end up fighting Ethel in the teahouse yet will notice that she is not too pleased you found her secret hideaway. She’ll transform and start to fight you. Once she has been reduced to half health, she’ll escape into a basement, which you can access by going through the fireplace.

The basement is home to many lost souls who have been scorned in some way by Ethel. And upon noticing one person she turned into a living tree door, you’ll be able to walk through him into the other side. A few unfortunate living bystanders are here, who have been corrupted by her mind controlling masks. Dispatch them, or wear a mask yourself in order to get by undetected. Past them will be a potentially dangerous path of toxic fumes blocking your advance to Ethel. However much like everything the witch conjures, these poison clouds aren’t real. The only real danger comes in the form of hidden flowers along the path, that will explode if you get to close to them.
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) – Auntie Ethel Boss Fight
You’ll now be in the Ancient Abode, and Mayrina is located in the middle of the room. She’s locked in a gnarled cage of vines, and suspended in mid-air. Once Ethel sees you, a short cutscene will play, and she will attempt to kill Mayrina by lighting the cage on fire. You’ll need to make sure Mayrina doesn’t die during this fight. The hag Ethel won’t play fair, attempting to confuse you with two different moves. First, she’ll spawn clones of herself that can be defeated in one hit, with only one doing real damage to her. Further into the fight, she’ll even clone herself as Mayrina. You’ll need to pay attention to any debuffs you’ve dealt to Ethel, and figure out the imposter with them.
Low on health, the witch will attempt to bargain with you, promising untold power as long as you let her leave with Mayrina. This could play out very well for you, if you have the RNG, as there is a dialogue option to attain the power while saving Mayrina. However if you’ve got a blood debt to settle with Ethel, you can reject her offer and finish her off. You will have successfully defeated the hag inhabiting the wetlands, and saved Mayrina. Strangely enough, she might not be too appreciative for your rescue mission. Wonder why that could be.
How to Start the Save Mayrina Quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)
The quest titled “Save Mayrina” is available once players enter the Sunlit Wetlands through the Forest. Players will find Auntie Ethel, a character you may have met and even traded with in Druid Grove, arguing with two brothers. They state that she has taken their sister Mayrina and demand Ethel give her back. You can choose to play along with her, or call her out. Either way, she’ll teleport away, requiring you to follow her back to her Riverside Teahouse.
