How to Defeat Latcher in Barotrauma

Latcher is a peculiar type of enemy that you can encounter in Barotrauma. When you look at him from an objective standpoint, he isn’t an OP enemy that is impossible to defeat. Nevertheless, whenever he appears, many players get an instant headache. Let’s break down this enemy and see what the best approach to fighting him would be.

Latcher’s Characteristics

Latcher is a giant sea monster with about 50 eyes, half a dozen legs, and a long and strong tongue with which he latches onto his victims (thus the name) like your submarine. His main attack move is to latch to your submarine and drag you to the depths. This move is dangerous for everyone, but especially for smaller submarines and those with low hull levels. Furthermore, it can so happen that the Latcher drags you down and confront you with other dangers of the ocean such as pirate ships, other monsters, or volcanos.

To understand Latcher better, here are his strengths and weaknesses:

  • Strengths:
    • Approaches quickly
    • Strong tongue latch attack
    • Solid ranged attack – shooting small projectiles
    • Has a strong slam attack that can cause leaks and other damages
    • Persistent
  • Weaknesses
    • Not too tanky
    • Can be killed in less than 5 minutes if you know what you’re doing
    • Easily detectable on sonar
    • Runs away as soon as he takes some damage

How to Fight Latcher

Latcher is an enemy that is trying to wear you out instead of directly destroying your submarine with a couple of devastating attacks. Even if he doesn’t manage to drag you down the depths with his tongue, constantly slamming your submarine will use up all your welding fuel and other resources. Furthermore, as he is absent he can heal up a bit so draining your ammo is another one of his strategies.

For an effective fight against Latcher, it’s key to regularly check your sonar, so you can predict where he is coming from. If you point your guns in the direction he is coming from and manage to land a couple of good shots before he reaches you, he will turn around and run away instantly.

Also, equip explosive ammo or any other devastating choice you may have, and try to time your shots perfectly when he is approaching you since he can and will run away quickly. Ideally, you would want to see which direction he is coming from on sonar, aim your guns at that side, and fire a couple of shots of your strongest ammo in him. Many people make the mistake of shooting a long barrage at him as soon as they see him, but this just causes them to waste their ammo.

The best weapons to use against him include:

  • Railgun
  • Pulse Laser
  • Anything with Piercing Ammo

Important tip: Don’t try to just run away from him or ignore him because he will be following you. That’s why killing him is a requirement, not an option.

Loot from Latcher

Unfortunately, creatures from Abyss such as Latcher don’t drop any loot when killed. However, they often guard abyssal islands and those islands often contain loot such as alien materials. Further, if killing Latcher is part of a mission in Hunting grounds you will get your mission reward.
