When you’re closing in on a defender with the ball in your hands in Madden 23, you’re left with few options. Either you can take the hit and deal with the subsequent yardage, try to evade the situation with a juke or even go directly through the other player using the truck stick. Alternatively, you can also try to hurdle over top of or slide underneath them as well.
In this guide, we will break down everything you need to know about how to hurdle and slide in Madden 23.
How to Hurdle and Slide in Madden 23
Hurdles used to be associated with track stars and rarely with NFL players but the modern age of football has altered this perception. Nowadays, hurdles are one of the best ways to avoid the oncoming defender. Essentially, it’s a sizeable jump that (if used properly) can send your player flying through the air and directly over top of the opposing player.

To perform a hurdle in Madden 23, all you need to do is;
- Press Y (for Xbox) or Triangle (for PlayStation) when the ball carrier has possession of the football and is faced with an oncoming defender.
The hurdle doesn’t take any stamina away from the player or slow them down. However, it does leave them open for a clean hit from the side, which could cause them to lose control of the football. So, the safest time to hurdle a defender is when you’re running into the end zone.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer not to take the risk of attempting to jump cleanly over another human being, you can also slide underneath them. Which is a far more common maneuver used in both Madden 23 and real-life football.
To perform a slide in Madden 23, all you need to do is;
- Tap X (for Xbox) or Square (for PlayStation) when the ball carrier is in open space.
Ensuring that your player is in open space is the most critical part. If you attempt a slide too early, then you’ll be cutting yourself short of yards. However, if you attempt a slide too late and with not enough space, then you could be setting your player up for a massive blindside hit. Which could result in a fumble and loss of possession, let alone a significant injury.
