One of the first pieces of information you learn from your time in the Bunker is that the Beast hates light. Because of this, you will find yourself having to time your runs perfectly so that the Generator never runs out. Keep an eye on the Pocket Watch otherwise you could be looking at a Blackout. Do no spend too long out of the safety of the light. Always keep that Pocket Watch going and up to date so that you know how much time you have left. Stockpile on Fuel and drop them off in the Administrator’s Office in case of emergency. Because once the lights go out, the Beast comes out to play. This is Vincent’s guide on keeping enough Fuel in Amnesia: The Bunker to survive until the bitter end.
How to Get Unlimited Fuel in Amnesia: The Bunker
Fuel is one of the most important aspects of the game, if not the most for those playing on Hard Difficulty. Whilst the game offers a lot of resources, you may find that you keep running out of Fuel at times of completing puzzles or getting too far from the Generator from exploration. Whatever the reason, you need to prioritize picking up Fuel Containers whenever you run into them. Of course, these take up a slot in your Inventory at a time and it can be hard to prioritize these over health. However, we recommend that at the beginning of the game, just after lifting Emergency Lockdown, you spend the time searching the Central Bunker, Officer Quarters and Maintenance for as many Fuel Containers are you can. Another good place to quickly check is in Arsenal Entrance where you can quickly run back to the Administrator Office for safety.
If you are finding that you have run out of Fuel within close proximity to the Administrator Office and Generator, it is time to venture out to the Fuel Storage. This can be found at the far side of Maintenance. In order to get there however, you will need to get past a ton of Rats. There are various ways you can get past them but it all depends on what tools you have been able to unlock through the Mission Storage Lockers of your fallen comrades. For those wanting to get to the Fuel Storage early on, we recommend using Flares as these can scare away the Rats, cause little noise to alert the Beast and do not damage Henri.
You need to get into the Pantry in Maintenance, grab Meat by killing, distracting or scaring the Rats away in this room. The Meat is located in a tipped over container, behind the cheese in the centre of the Pantry. Once you have picked up the Meat, go to Workshop. The Workshop Tunnel leads directly into the Storage Hub. To get through the Rats, you can either use Flares, Gas Grenades (requires Gas Mask), or a Torch (requires Lighter). Once you are on the other side, turn right and into the Storage Hub. Be sure to be careful of any booby-traps in the area.
There is a booby-trap installed on the Fuel Storage door, whilst the Bolt Cutters can handle this, you may not have them at this point. Instead, just open this door, keeping a safe distance and then run into the Chapel as this is guaranteed to be open. Be aware that there is also a booby-trap in this corridor leading to the Chapel. Jump the wire so that you do not get hit. You can crouch hide behind the table in the Chapel (one with severed heads on it and a Dog Tag) until the Beast goes away.
When the Fuel Storage is free, go inside and move the Fuel Bottle underneath the barrel out of the way (into your Inventory). Here you can refill a couple of Empty Bottles available in the room. Instead of always keeping an eye out for Empty Bottles on your run, you can go to the Wine Cellar where there is pretty much an unlimited supply of Bottles available that you can fill up with Fuel. The Wine Cellar requires either the Bolt Cutters or Wrench to unlock. Note: Youu will need the Wrench to get the Bolt Cutters.
To fill Empty Bottles with Fuel in Amnesia: The Bunker, go into your Inventory, select the Bottle, hold interact key and connect it to the barrel to fill.
What to do if you run out of Fuel – Other Ways of Using Light
If you are not a fan of going to the Fuel Storage to get Bottles of Fuel in The Bunker, you can use other methods to light the way should a Blackout happen. These are the Winding Flashlight and Torch. We also highly recommend that players do not unnecessarily turn on every switch they find in their exploration. In my playthrough, I found that I had only one light turned on in the Central Bunker and only turned on lights if the game required me to do so. E.g. turning on the Communications Radio.
Whilst the Winding Flashlight is a louder method of producing light, it will be your go-to choice when surviving a Blackout. A little tip is to turn your Gamma up so that you can see better when a Blackout occurs, looking similar to Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Penumbra: Black Plague when your eyes adjust to a blue hue on the screen so that you can see. Although it is not necessary, it is an option if you keep finding yourself in darkness. Turning on every switch for light you come across will drain the Generator Fuel further. For this reason, you may wish to craft Torches. The Lighter is required to do so however.
To make a Torch, get Cloth and a Stick. Sticks are one of the harder resources to find in the game. But a good place to start is the Workshop in Maintenance. Go into your Inventory, select Combine on Cloth and click on Stick to make a Torch. The Torch will remain lit if you have it in your hand, however if you try to bring anything else out, the Torch will go out where you need the Lighter to relight. Keep this in mind as you will need the Lighter with you at all times, taking up another slot in your Inventory. You can hold the interact keys to swing the Torch which will scare away Rats. Although the Torch does not last long, it will help you massively in a Blackout or if the Beast is too persistent that the Flashlight is putting you in danger.
