How to get the Intermediate and Advanced Fishing Rod in Potion Permit

Going fishing for fishing rods

Fishing mini-games have become an expected inclusion in most games these days. Some people just like taking a quick reel and hook out and see what they catch. The interaction can be very fun and rewarding. Some games however will go above and beyond just to make you earn the right to fish. Potion Permit seems to want you to REALLY love fishing in order to upgrade your fishing rod once you get one. Here is how to get both the Intermediate and Advanced level fishing rod in Potion Permit.

Intermediate Fishing Rod (2nd Level)

It took a lot of trial and error and gameplay to finally figure this one out. There was a lot of speculation in the growing Potion Permit playing community on just how to get these upgrades. Luckily for you, we have played the game extensively to confirm these methods are true and you can upgrade your rod this way.

Firstly, we will start with the Intermediate Rod. This is the first upgrade, and the second level of the basic fishing rod you get near the start of the game after visiting Leano at her bait shop the first time. You have to have both Leano and Reyner on their second friendship level. Complete and fill their affinity bars at least once. On top of that, you will have to fish over 50 times before the side quest begins. A plus sign ( + ) will appear over you once you’ve reached this milestone.

Ironically, this sidequest is called “Advanced Fishing Rod” but it’s for the Intermediate level. Confusing I know, but this happens with the next level of the fishing rod as well so at least the confusion is consistent. Once you’ve done these three requirements, you’ll trigger the side quest for your first rod upgrade and have to gather the materials Leono asks you to fetch for her to properly upgrade the rod. After all that you will finally have your Intermediate Fishing Rod.

Advanced Fishing Rod (3rd level)

Your leveling up to the third and final level of fishing rod works about the same. Once you have your Intermediate rod you can start fishing and aim to reach north of 100 fish caught, maybe 150. A double plus sign ( ++ ) will appear once you accomplish this. If you keep fishing eventually it will tell you you have reached a max level and the word ‘MAX’ will appear above you as well.

Along with this accomplishment, you will need Leano and Reyner to have maxed out their friendship with you. Complete their second friend quests first. Since they are both romantic options as well, they have a third level for you to achieve, but those should not be required for this quest to improve your rod one last time. Once again the quest should trigger on the town bulletin board. Go to Leano one last time and she will give you a list of materials. Once the list is complete, the quest “The Ultimate Fishing Rod” will be done and you will have your Advanced Fishing Rod and should be able to fish anywhere in Moonbury.
