How to Freeze the Chat on Twitch

Want your chat frozen in time?

There is absolutely no doubt that Twitch is one of, if not the biggest streaming platform available right now. With millions of active users a day, it is most definitely a site that gets quite a bit of traffic and doesn’t seem to show signs of slowing down.

Recommended Videos

Though the streaming platform started with video games in mind, you can watch just about anything on there these days. As long as it isn’t too risqué. And over the years, Twitch has implemented a lot of great features to make both the streamers’ and viewers’ lives a bit easier.

As someone who prefers to view chats as opposed to streaming myself, there’s nothing I love more than interacting with both the streamer and other viewers throughout the chat. But if you’re in a stream with hundreds if not thousands of other viewers, that chat can run pretty quickly. Luckily, Twitch has some great features that allow viewers and streamers to pause and/or freeze the chat altogether!

Let’s explain how it works!

How to Freeze the Chat on Twitch

There are 4 different kinds of chat settings you have at your disposal to freeze the chat; Scroll Only, Mouseover, Hold Alt Key, and Mouseover/Alt Key. Scroll Only will temporarily pause the chat if you scroll up, Mouseover will allow you to freeze the chat if you hover over it, Hold Alt Key with pause the chat for as long as you hold it, and Mouseover/Hold Alt Key allows you to swap between the two at will.

Here’s how to access them:

  • Open the stream that you wish to watch.
  • Next, go to the “live chat box”.
  • Click on the gear icon which is located next to the chat button.
  • After that, select the “pause chat” option. If on a computer, you can hit the Alt key to do this as it is a shortcut for this action.
  • Once you’ve clicked the pause chat option, you’ll see a drop-down of various settings for pausing chats.
  • Just select the method you’d like to use and then you’re good to go!

But, now you know all that you need to know about how you can freeze the chat on Twitch! Be sure to check out some of our other coverage on Twitch and its ever-growing platform for even more information!
