Common Crashing Problems

It has been reported that the most common issues for the Modern Warfare campaign to crash is during ‘Kill or Capture’ and ‘Recon by Fire’ missions. The game appears to crash consistently at the second garage on ‘Recon by Fire’ after clearing the enemies. There are also framerate drops when you kill enemies near your fallen comrade in ‘Kill or Capture’.

Check PC Specification

Firstly, check that your PC meets the listed minimum system requirements to run Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. If you are trying to run the game without meeting these requirements, you are more likely to experience crashes. The requirements are:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
  • Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 470
  • Video memory: 3GB
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage space: 25GB
  • Sound card: DirectX compatible
  • Recommended graphic drivers: Nvidia – 516.79, AMD – 21.9.

Enable Hi-Rez Assets Cache

Enabling Hi-Rez Assets Cache is important if you are running the game using high-resolution assets. You must also clear at least 32GB of space on your hard drive. This should help if the issues you are experiencing are visual stutters and crashes.

Lower Graphics Settings

The answer may be in your settings. If you are presented with crashing issues lower your graphics settings. If the crashing stops after you have lowered your graphics settings, test the game by adjusting individual settings to fit your gaming needs. The setting we recommend lowering is the Shader quality.

Run a Repair

You may have downloaded corrupted files, therefore you should scan these files via Battle.net. You can do this by selecting the game, seen in the left pane, and clicking on ‘Options’ to finally select ‘Scan and Repair’. On Steam, select properties after right-clicking on Modern Warfare 2. Select the ‘Local Files’ tab and click ‘Verify Integrity of Game Files’. Do keep in mind that doing this solution on Battle.net could delete and redownload the game.

Update Graphics Driver

Game crashes can be caused by outdated drivers. You will want to keep these updated in order to avoid any future crashes. Head to your manufacturer’s website, whether that is AMD or NIVIDA and download the latest graphics driver.

Other Solutions

  • Close any other apps when running the game
  • Check for System Software and Game Updates
  • Restart PC or Console

If you are still experiencing issues after trying these solutions, contact Activision. Let them know what solutions you have tried so that they may identify the causing problem to these crashes.
