How to Defeat the Mana Drinker in Lone Ruin

That's a whole lotta monster.

It’s pretty much a rule of roguelike games that the final boss always has to be the biggest, ugliest monster that the game can possibly throw at you. Nothing else would possibly do for capping off a run. In Lone Ruin, that monster is the Mana Drinker, and it would love to get a taste of you. Here’s how to defeat the Mana Drinker in Lone Ruin.

How to Defeat the Mana Drinker in Lone Ruin

The Mana Drinker is the third and final boss of Lone Ruin, encountered at the very end of a run in the 21st level. This thing is a big dude with a bigger attitude, and it absolutely does not care for your presence in its immediate vicinity.

Right from the get-go, the Mana Drinker is going to come at you guns blazing. Absolutely every means of attack at its disposal is on the table from the start, including:

  • Jumping at you and swinging its massive sword
  • Firing off two lines of shots in a helix pattern
  • Dropping explosive bursts from above, signified by warning signs on the ground
  • Summoning basic enemies

I won’t sugarcoat it, this fight is going to be about ten minutes of absolute mayhem. The first and foremost rule is to start running and never ever stop. Stay moving at all times, make liberal use of your dash, and just generally endeavor to not be in the same place for two consecutive seconds. There are going to be a lot of hazards flying all over the place, so you need to have precise awareness of where you are and where you’re going at all times.

Similar to how the Mana Drinker attacks you, pretty much anything and everything is on the table here. Whatever spells you’ve got just start unloading on it every single chance you get. Hold those triggers down and don’t let go. Spells with a cold effect are incredibly valuable here, as the Mana Drinker is a highly mobile opponent. Slowing it down will give you some extra breathing room, not to mention a slower target. Boomerang and Black Hole are my personal weapons of choice for this fight, but you could also win with Shards, Barrage, Blizzard, and more. Berzerk may also help in a pinch, as it boosts your speed and removes your cooldowns temporarily, allowing you to stick and move at a heightened pace.

Just keep moving and retaliating. Don’t look at the health bar, don’t worry about the summoned minions, just keep on firing until this thing stops breathing. And maybe a little bit after that, just for good measure.
