How we counter Champions in Destiny 2 is changing with Lightfall. Bungie is making some substantial changes to the Champion system, introducing new ways for us to stun them without relying on seasonal mods.
The changes go live as soon as Lightfall drops, so you’ll want to read up before then. Countering Champions is about to change forever and for the better.
Destiny 2 Lightfall – How to Counter Champions
Barrier
- Solar – Firing at the Champion while Radiant will stun.
- Void – Firing at the Champion with Volatile Rounds will stun.
- Strand – Firing at the Champion with Unraveling Rounds stun.
Barriers are perhaps the easiest Champion type to counter with these Destiny 2 Lightfall changes. Becoming Radiant on a Solar build is remarkably easy, as is loading Volatile thanks to Gyrfalcon’s Hauberk. We don’t know how effective Unraveling Rounds will be for dealing with Champions, but we can assume it’s going to be just as good, if not better than the Light 3.0 options.
Beyond these changes, Arbalest and Eriana’s Vow are both still great Anti-Barrier options, as is Revision Zero. Barriers aren’t going to be very intimidating come Lightfall, although all of the Champion types will be more manageable.

Overload
- Void – Suppressing the Champion will stun.
- Arc – Jolting the Champion will stun.
- Stasis – Slowing the Champion will stun.
Overloads have always been the most frustrating Champion type to counter in Destiny, and that isn’t going to change any time soon. Despite that, they will be more manageable now. While Void doesn’t have too many ways to Suppress, Jolting is notably easier, and slowing is easier yet again.
Bungie is clearly playing up Stasis’ position as a control-style Subclass. Slowing a target with Stasis is beyond easy, and combined with the ability to also stun Unstoppables on Shatter, makes Stasis arguably the best Anti-Champion, and by extension, the best Grandmaster Nightfall Subclass going into Lightfall.
Unstoppable
- Solar – Igniting the Champion will stun.
- Arc – Blinding the Champion will stun.
- Stasis – Shattering the Champion will stun.
- Strand – Suspending the Champion will stun.
Unstoppables are sitting in the middle of the road with these changes. None of their new weakness is extremely exploitable, but they are all accessible enough to be targeted. Igniting is as simple as shooting or throwing grenades, although Blinding is a little harder to pull off. We don’t know about how Strand will fair for Suspending targets, but Shattering a Frozen Unstoppable Champion now stuns, too.
That’s important because it effectively allows Stasis to single-handedly deal with both Overloads and Unstoppables with the same utility. If you can Slow a target, you can Shatter them.
The likes of the Crucible Fusion Rifle – Riptide, is going to benefit massively from this. That weapon rolls with Chill Clip, so if you’re running a Radiant Solar build while using it, it’s capable of stunning all three Champion types without any additional mods or help.
Champions are going to be much easier to deal with in Lightfall – so get yourself accustomed to the changes now. To be kept in the Destiny 2 loop as we move towards The Final Shape, follow Gamer Journalist on Facebook. We’ll make sure you never miss an update.
