How to Control the Wolf in God of War: Ragnarok

A wolf can be a loyal companion and handy ally in battle, if you know how to control it. Kratos and Atreus will soon find out if they can.

Exploring the nine realms in God of War: Ragnarok has not only been a truly mesmerizing experience visually, it has also revealed many large updates to it’s already solid gameplay. Santa Monica Studios has taken everything from the 2018 soft reboot of God of War and brought it to new heights. One feature of the games wide variability is the chance to play a different character. Slight spoiler territory ahead. At a certain point in the game, the player will get the chance to slip into the boots of Atreus as he is thrust into the playable limelight for the first time. Boasting a completely distinct gameplay style by utilizing his bow and quickness to slide around his enemies. However, these are not the only tools he has at his disposal.

In order to transform into a wolf as Atreus, players will need to reach the mission titled ‘The Lost Sanctuary‘. Getting to this point allows the player to take control of Atreus. Once doing so, to activate the rage meter and change forms, click in on the left and right stick at the same time. Atreus will take the form of a wolf and by pressing R1 or R2 will attack enemies around him. Much like using the rage meter with Kratos, it only last a short while but will heal Atreus with every attack. Back to his original form, players will need to figure out how to increase Atreus’s Spartan Rage.

Increasing Atreus’s Spartan Rage meter is synonymous with how to increase his fathers rage meter. As the young Jötnar, by traversing the lands you find yourself in and encountering enemies, you will be able to fill that rage meter. Using Runic Summons as well as normal attacks and bow abilities will reward you with portions of your rage meter. Getting hit nets you some rage meter along with performing finishers on enemies. Basically, almost anything that happens in combat will award you with some slight increase to Atreus’s Spartan Rage.

There is no shortage of praises this game deserves, and none more than the innovation that has happened with the gameplay. From completely new playable characters, to the myriad of companions that will be joining you on your adventures, it’s truly a marvel. Throwing a character like Atreus into the forefront of the game at some points was a very bold move by Santa Monica. Thankfully it has paid off in dividends and the experience of transforming as Atreus for the first time will always be a sight to behold for me.
