How armor works in Dark and Darker

Armor, in Dark and Darker, is actually very simply in its execution. Knowing exactly how it works will ensure you know how to protect yourself, and how to damage your enemies. You may not expect it to be the case, but the defense of the armor isn’t localised to where it is worn.

For example, if an enemy wears a sleeve of armor on one arm, but nothing on the other, your damage won’t get reduced more on the protected arm. Defense is one stat that is applied to the whole body regardless of where it is worn. Your damage, on the other hand, is localised.

Hits to the head get x2 damage, hits to the torso get x1 damage, and hits to the arms or legs actually do reduced damage. So it doesn’t matter if a foe wears a helmet, hitting it on the head will always be the most viable option.

How to block in Dark and Darker

Unlike armor, shields in Dark and Darker do actually have a physical presence and you will have to use them accordingly to protect yourself. Shields block hits and are a huge asset to players that go toe-to-toe with their enemies. But they’ll be useless if you don’t use them properly.

For a shield to be effective, you must actively pivot towards the swing of an enemies weapon to ensure they hit your shield, and not you. They don’t passively block on their own. If you’re about to get hit from an overhead swing, look up, and you’ll realize your shield will block the hit, protecting you.

Being on top of this will save your life whenever you’re in a tough spot!
