Dwarf Fortress is all about doing multiple tasks at once and micromanaging each one using the dwarfs. In fact, location-based tasks are so important, they have a specific term in the game. Occupations are tasks which you assign to dwarf in a location.

These dwarfs act as Messengers, responsible for the task/mission you have assigned to them. However, we have seen many players, especially new ones who struggle with assigning them. Let’s see how you can assign Messengers in the game.

Assigning a Messenger for doing various tasks is not very difficult. So, without further ado, let’s get into it.

Before assigning a Messenger, decide on the location and which task you want them to fulfil. If you have not fixed an Occupation for a location, first try completing that.

Open the “Assign occupations” menu by pressing the “I” key. Now scroll to your preferred location and press the “Enter” key. You can assign multiple Occupations to one location in Dwarf Fortress.

Once you are set with the Occupation, press the “I” key on your keyboard and navigate to the Locations and Occupations menu to assign a dwarf as a Messenger. Once assigned, you can send the dwarf to work from the Civilizations screen by pressing the “C” key and request dwarfs to become citizens of your conquered sites and holdings by pressing the “R” key.
