How to deal with fell moods in Dwarf Fortress

What is a fell mood?

In Dwarf Fortress, a fell mood is not a great thing. An alert in the top corner will announce that a dwarf has adopted a fell mood. You can recentre the camera on the poor dwarf.

Dwarves only go into fell moods if they are unhappy. It is a slim chance, but a chance nonetheless. If a dwarf falls into a fell mood, then they will go up to the closest dwarf and instantly kill them before taking whatever materials they need to a butcher’s or tanner’s workshop.

They will claim the workshop and it will be unavailable until they have constructed an artifact out of their victim’s bones or leather. Strangely, they will become a legendary craftsdwarf.

Due to the price being so small, merely one dwarf, many players see fell moods as great. Naturally, there is a chance that an important dwarf will be slaughtered, but most likely an average dwarf will be chosen. So for the cost of one dwarf, you have gained one legendary craftsdwarf and an artefact.
