Does Super Mega Baseball 4 Have a Home Run Derby?

A swing...and a miss

Sometimes you just need to settle the score on who truly is the best of the best. You can tally up all of their statistics, get an average on the most likely to succeed, but who wants to look at the maths? I would rather see some straight shooting with a bat in hand and endless home runs to gawk at in awe over. But it is a long wait for a year to pass in order to see the next Home Run Derby. Sometimes you want to experience the home run in the here and now, without waiting a moment later. But is the Home Run Derby in Super Mega Baseball 4? This is our guide on the matter.

What is a Home Run Derby?

The Home Run Derby is a competition set to bring the best in the world to go up against one another in an intense home run battle to see who can hit the most home runs back-to-back until there was a clear winner. Whilst the rules have changed since the 80s, from a time limit being added to a measuring contest for each home run successfully hit (having to measure at least 475ft as of 2022). The Home Run Derby has ran annually since 1985, with 1988 and 2020 being the only exceptions to this event due to cancellation.

Does Super Mega Baseball 4 Have the Derby?

For those who are fans of Baseball, the Home Run Derby can feel like the UEFA Champions League. It is the place to see the best of the American League at their current peak, be it physically or for their career. With few winners having won the Home Run Derby multiple times, sometimes back-to-back, placing their name in the Baseball Hall of Fame, it is to no surprise that players at home want to try their luck at hitting the Derby record of home runs in their own event. The Home Run Derby in SMB has been asked for year in, year out, with players always wanting a Derby Mode added into the installment as a means of practising hitting consistent home runs or to determine the best batter as of the standards determined by EA for SMB.

With each Super Mega Baseball game comes the disappointment that the Home Run Derby would never be brought to the game. Being asked time and time again on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit, fans wondered if this Mode would become an option as an update in SMB3 but with no reply from EA or Metalhead Software Inc., the fans experienced silence in return to their pleas. But is the same said for SMB4? Unfortunately yes, the fans would once again not get what they were looking for with a Derby being introduced as a Game Mode or Practise Arena. With upgrades and improvements focussed on gameplay and AI performance, SMB4 followed the footsteps of FIFA and eSports PES, where the goal is to always better the gaming experience through the gameplay and visuals rather than adding something new to the table.

For now, the only way to experience a the Derby in Video Game form, your only way currently is to try your luck in MLB Home Run Derby (2022).
