Does Roblox have Voice Chat?

On principle, I typically leave voice chatting off in the games I play, mostly because I have a bad habit of talking to myself. In creative games like Roblox, though, it can be a helpful tool to coordinate projects or otherwise socialize, provided you don’t mind weathering the occasional stream of profanity from a twelve-year-old. Does Roblox have voice chat, though?

Despite whatever its actual demographics may be, Roblox is at least intended for a younger audience; at least 56% of the game’s player base is of the age of 13 or below. This is why most of Roblox’s in-game chatting options are relatively limited compared to other online games. It is also why Roblox does not currently have any voice chatting systems built into it, as there would be no way for admins to shield delicate ears from some rando reading the entirety of 50 Shades of Grey

However, as Roblox has become a more prolific game, requests for some manner of voice chatting system have grown in volume, and the devs do hear them. Just recently, the team’s vice president of engineering, Adam Miller, said that they were working on a form of “safe” voice chat that they hope to implement at some unspecified point in the future. How exactly a “safe” voice chat would work, I haven’t the foggiest. Maybe it’d have a built-in censorship beep or something.

Anyway, for the time being, there is no native voice chat support for Roblox. If, however, you’re personally acquainted with the people you’re playing with, you can easily run private voice channels through third-party apps like Discord or Parsec. Frankly, I think private channels are better anyway. If you’re going to be silly in a public place, at least only people you know can hear you.
