Destiny 2 Lightfall: How to Get Weapon Mods

I feel old...

Figuring out how to get weapon mods in Destiny 2 Lightfall has been a bit of a mystery post-launch. With all the focus on the armor mod rework, weapon mods have fallen through the cracks, leaving a lot of New Lights confused. I think I’ve figured out the solution, though.

The single best way to get weapon mods, and mods in general, in Destiny 2 Lightfall is to increase your Guardian Rank. Mods are given as rewards on special challenges throughout the Guardian Rank system, with certain challenges unlocking certain mods.

For example, there is a set of Armor Charge mods for completing Nightfalls to progress to rank seven. Previous ranks will contain most of these challenges, so if you start Lightfall at rank 6, you should be good to go. It’s unclear if weapon mods specifically are given as rewards in those lower ranks, but it seems to be everyone’s best guess right now.

So, boot up Lightfall and make getting to Guardian Rank 6 a priority. Once you do, you’ll be free to do all the build crafting you’d like.

If you’re still trying to get your hands on weapon mods, then you probably don’t have experience with them. A lot of them aren’t worth running – especially compared to the top two. When you do get access to your mods, you’ll want to keep an eye out for these two:

  • Minor Spec.
  • Boss Spec.

Minor spec gives your weapon 7.5% more damage against rank-and-file enemies, meaning it’s the add-clear mod. This is the mod you have on your primary, and it never leaves it.

Boss spec is the same, except for bosses and vehicles. Boss DPS in Destiny 2 is all about stacking buffs and debuffs, so the 7.5% you get free from a spec mod is absolutely mandatory.

Beyond those two, Backup Mag is a decent option in some scenarios, as is Icarus Grip for PvP. In general, though, you’ll only be running those two.
