Could Ghost Die Again in the New Modern Warfare 2?

Could we experience a retelling of the same thing we've already seen play out?

Call of Duty is known for its grandiose moments that become cemented in gaming history as some of the most iconic, finding themselves at the same notoriety as moments. If there’s one thing that old-school Call of Duty players will never forget, it’s the death of the fan-favorite mystery man, Simon “Ghost” Riley at the hands of Lieutenant General Shepherd in the iconic twist ending from the original 2009 iteration of Modern Warfare 2.

And with Ghost’s inclusion in the upcoming reboot of the game, Modern Warfare 2, players are worried that we’ll see him die yet again in some kind of sick groundhog day joke. But there’s good reason to fear for this heroic character. As more details come out about a new leak, it’s looking grim for the man behind the mask. But should we really be worried? Let’s talk about whether or not Ghost could die again in the new Modern Warfare 2 game.

Being shot dead and burned by the traitorous Lieutenant General Shepard in the original Modern Warfare 2, players were hoping that this fresh take on the series would spare the iconic character, saving him for a possible third entry for the series. But could he bite the bullet again? Let’s look at the evidence.

Firstly, 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot actually mentions a General Shepherd though we’re not shown the character. This is good foreshadowing as it hints at inclusion in a future title, though could be a throwaway nod to his inclusion in past titles.

The bigger piece of evidence we have is from a leak via data miners who have claimed to have found a mission called “Strike” which takes place in the fictional country of Urzikstan, with players taking control of Ghost. This mission leak has players worried though because the original mission “Loose Ends” which led up to Ghost’s demise in the original took place in the Caucasus Region, bordering Russia and Georgia which is coincidentally where this mission will also take place.

Could this be the cold hard fact that Ghost will indeed die yet again? It could, but not likely. As players have already seen him die once, they would already see this coming with a setup as these data miners are stating. It would be a bit on the nose. Additionally, the “Loose Ends” mission had players take it on as Roach, with Ghost as your support. So playing as him is a different take altogether.

My guess is that a new player in the game could potentially backstab Task Force 141 and attempt to kill Ghost but ultimately fail. Who is that you ask? None other than Colonel Alejandro Vargas. A brand new character to the franchise as a whole, we really don’t know anything about him whatsoever aside from the fact that he’s a Colonel in the Mexican Special Forces and is a Task Force 141 member.

It’s important to stress that Vargas wasn’t included in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Open Beta as a playable character, though all of the other members of Task Force 141 were. He also isn’t included as a skin in the Red Team 141 Operator Pack that players get for pre-ordering the Vault Edition of the game either. Could he be our secret assassin this time around? Only time will tell, but I think Ghost may live to see Modern Warfare 3 in this universe.
