It’s a common trope in RPGs to have an ability or class that allows for the learning of abilities from enemies. In Final Fantasy VII, for example, the Enemy Skill materia lets you adopt select moves from an exclusive list of monsters.
The same can be said for Chained Echoes, which introduces a concept called Canned Enemies. Canned/Cannable Enemies are effectively opponents that possess certain moves that can be learned by using the ‘Uncanny Encounter’ ability. But, what are these moves specifically, and how are they used?
What are Canned Enemies in Chained Echoes?
In Chained Echoes, you’ll encounter a character named Tomke. Tomke has amnesia, and thus, only knows one move — Uncanny Encounter. Ignoring the abysmal pun, this character won’t learn any new abilities, regardless of how much you level him up. In fact, the only way to teach Tomke new abilities is by using Uncanny Encounter on select enemies. But: it’s important to remember that you should only do this once you’ve deprived these enemies of most of their HP. Otherwise, it may not work as intended.

That said, it probably wouldn’t help to just go around using Uncanny Encounter on random enemies. That honestly sounds like a recipe for frustration and disappointment. So, here’s a shortlist of enemies to keep a watchful eye out for. If you run into any of these, be sure to use Uncanny Encounter to learn their ability.
