Chained Echoes – How to Complete A Goblin’s Dilemma

Even goblins deserve a bit of empathy.

In the current mindset of fantasy fans, opinions of goblins are generally higher than they used to be. That said, within actual fantasy worlds, goblins are still weird little green people who talk funny, so there’s always a bit of a disconnect. This calls for mediation! Here’s how to complete A Goblin’s Dilemma in Chained Echoes.

Chained Echoes – How to Complete A Goblin’s Dilemma

As you’re venturing through Rohlna Fields, near the waterfalls to the north, you’ll come upon what appears to be a goblin tied to a tree. This goblin, Bark, insists that he’s human based on his ability to speak the human language. After you untie him, he’ll rush off to explain himself to the villagers, thus beginning the sidequest, A Goblin’s Dilemma.

Follow Bark’s trail to reach Basil, where there is evidence of some manner of a monster attack. One of the villagers that you’ve met previously, Jan, had his home attacked by the monster and his daughter threatened. Head to Seaside Village to get Jan’s side of the story. One thing’ll lead to another, and the village elder will task you with mediating peace between them and the local Goblin Village, giving you the Goblin’s Crest as a sign of your neutrality.

Return to the waterfalls where Bark was tied up and make your way down into the Ogranne Grottos. From the local Fast Travel Crystal, head north, then east to reach the gates of Goblin Village. With the Crest, you’ll be permitted safe passage. If you’ve never been down here before, you may need to complete the sidequest The Gates of Nhysa first.

Before anything else, make your way to the northwestern portion of the village and chat with the goblin merchant. He can’t speak human language, but he’ll still sell you stuff. This merchant sells Incocybin Berries and Baibai X, both of which you should buy for later if you have the cash, but for the purposes of this quest, all you need right now is the key item “The Human Language.” This allows you to translate between human and goblin speech. Using this ability, talk to the goblin in the northeast of the village to learn about a key he dropped in the mushroom patch. Head there and pick up the Miner’s Key for later.

With your newfound understanding, head for the large tent in the northern part of the village to chat with the Goblin Chief. He’s not really interested in talking, even when Jan shows up, and orders you out of his tent. Bark will show up again, having lost his ability to speak human, but will still manage to inform you that Jan’s daughter, Marsia, is in danger.

Return to Seaside Village, where a gaggle of goblins will pick a fight with you. You’ll get the choice to kill or spare one of them; it won’t affect the quest overall, but it is worth noting you’ll get more rewards later if you spare it. The goblins will retreat from the village, vowing revenge. This is technically the end of the sidequest, but there is one last wrinkle to take care of.

Make your way to Rockbottom in the Kortara Mountain Range and follow the minecart tracks, and you’ll find an elevator that’ll carry you down into the Wygrand Mines. Use the Miner’s Key to open the door at the end of the passageway. Make your way past the goblins, and you’ll come across an altar where you can swipe the Darkness Tablet. Additionally, there’s a totem the goblins are worshipping that you can burn down. If you do, all the goblins will transform into humans, their apparent curse broken. Neat!

Finally, return to Jan’s place in Seaside and enter the cave behind it. If you spared the goblin before, Jan will reward you with an Elixir, two Repair Kits DX, and two Platinum Ores.
